Replaced rear inserts but I have a question?

I replaced the rear inserts in my Max this week as the old ones were completely wasted and caused the rear of the car to bounce and shudder violently when going over bumps. I got the old ones out and the new KYB GR-2 inserts in with no problems but have a question. My book says that prior to inserting the new insert I am to pour in 11+ oz of "Nissan Strut Fluid or the equivolent." Being a bit **** about following instructions I went to two local parts stores then to the Nissan dealer then to two import parts places in search of this strut fluid. The two local parts guys shrugged their shoulders and recommended motor oil. The Nissan guys said they don't use strut fluid as they replace the struts as a unit and didn't have or know what strut fluid is. Both import parts guys said that no fluid was necessary when installing aftermarket (KYB) inserts. Listening to my local import guys I put them back together without any fluid. I've been driving around for a few days and haven't noticed any weirdness. The instructions from KYB didn't mention any strut fluid either. So did I do it right or should I have put some KY Jelly in first?

The strut fluid is not necessary for the aftermarket struts. These come ready with enough lubrication to not cause any trouble. don't reallly know why the manual says strut fluid . Not even when I did the 3rd gen suspension conversion did I need to us strut fluid

Use a little ATF. That's what I did with mine. This helps cool the insert.
