hi everybody im new here cuz i just bought a '87 Maxima and I got here surfing for Maxima sites, by the way, this rocks. I was just wondering if you could help me with some problems! ok, here we go...

1. My car's transmission measures about 2 quarts of excess oil and I was thinking if that could be the cause for not shifting from 4th to 3rd automatically. when I push the pedal to the metal in, say, an inclination or when I want to pass other cars in the highway, it doesn't shift! the motor keeps going up and going up! and the worst of all, it seems like the transmission is slipping it's clutches or something like that...if I want to shift down I have to push the overdrive button off... any suggestions?

2. My Max has power seats, sunroof, power antenna (and the switch to turn it off), but I do not hear any talking chic nor I see a switch in the center console to turn her off. What model is my Max? it doesnt say anywhere...

3. the last owner of my max put really weird tire sizes on it! the original tire sizes are 195/60 -15. should I put theese ones or are there any sizes you could tell me that are better? I have the factory 15" on...

any help you can bring me is really appreciated!!

Welcom to the world of maxima....on the talking thing..I have an 87 GXE top of the line power everything and like you no talking chic so my guess is the pulled it at the last minute and just didn't get rid of the hardware..on the transmision issue my car also has that problem where it wont shift down on hills unless I floor it and I just atribute it to old age and the transmision type I just turn the overdrive off going up hills...but I should probably get it rebuilt, I have done some hard trans drops and it's showing..now for the tires ..I have 17" wheels with 215/40 ZR17 Falkin Tires..they work great a ton of stick but i would go with some 16" with 205/50 R or ZR rated tires

 

I too have an 87 with power everything but mine has the talking chick. But she's french in my Max! Gotta get that changed somehow. The model is unknowen to me.

 

thanks for the advice man! greatly appreciated, but i dont have money(yet) to buy new wheels so if I want to keep the 15" wheels should I stick with the original tire sizes?

 

I would stick with the original tire size maybe go a little wider, say 205/60 R15. I had the recommended size on there when I bought it and they worked fine..Just now I'm spoilt because the tires I have now are so much stickier..O well...Just don't go around increasing radius turns at high speeds and back off the throttle on the stock tires!!!.I did it and ended up facing the oppisite direction in 10 seconds...

 

You might try adjusting the transmission detent cable. The Haynes service manual has a fairly good adjustment procedure for that. I had the same problem with my `88 and the adjustment took care of it. If not adjusted correctly then the transaxle will either have the symptoms that you describe, or will down-shift too frequently/easily.

I cant find the website for the life of me, but its out there somewhere.. its how I decided on my name for this board. Your car, like many others, is what some have come to call a "floater"... in the 80s, the US put a limit on the number of cars Japanese companies could import, so the Japanese sent cars to Central/South America and had a good portion of them sent here.
On the whole, there are 2 "US" models of the Maxima.. One has power seats, one has a power sun roof (forgive me if I'm wrong, I'm trying to remember what was on the site). The model that was shipped to countries like Panama had both power seats and the power roof, and, since the native language was not supported by the "talking lady" that our cars lack, it was simply taken out.
back to the car
Much of the car stock sent south of the United States stayed on the boats and got shipped "from South American dealers", or sat on a lot and then got shipped to America. This was done to get around the limit placed on the imports... Japanese not being ones to miss out on the booming automotive market in America (afterall, American cars do suck IMO)... so yeah... your car was "not made" for the US market so that Nissan could make more money by routing it around a bit to get it to American dealers... or something like that... If I find the website ever again, I'll be sure to post it for you...

Sorry about the lack of response; I've been out of pocket. I got my Haynes at Auto Zone. Also I'm sure that a Chiltens will have the procedure. If can't get anywhere, then let me know and I can e-mail the procedure to you.

That was probably the lamest attempt to get 15 posts that I have ever seen.

 

My trannys just wont shift unless I let off the gas from 3rd to 4th fluids are good filters new maybe its just getting old

 

Make sure you check the trans fluid level with the engine running, by going through each gear and ending in park. Otherwise the fluid will read high with the engine off. There are also two fluid levels - one for hot and one for cold.
