Overheating Issue

On my way down south to LA from Northern California, about half way I started to hear a rattling sound coming from the engine when I accelerated. My temperature gauge is broken on my car so I wouldn't have known my car was overheating at that point. I pulled the codes from my ECU and got a 22, as well as the 21 which I have gotten pretty much since I got the car (should fix it sometime ;p ) But anyway, the code 22, Fuel Pump Circuit came up which was new for my car. So anyway, I got down to LA through the Grapevine (Mountains) and everything, then on my way back, after going through the Grapevine again, with the rattling still present, it happened. My lower radiator hose, popped off the block, spewing all my coolant. So hoping it was just a loose clamp, I got a new clamp and tightened it on. Refilled the coolant etc, and kept going. A heater hose ruptured and my overfill tank was spewing steam.

Now after the little story, I checked the internet and found out that rattling noise could be from a overheating engine, which would make complete sense based on the symptoms of everything that happened. So now I am trying to find out why it is overheating. I did find out my fans don't seem to be working, but that shouldn't affect highway speeds much. I do see a nice steady flow in my radiator, so the pump and thermostat should both be good, and there isn't anything blocking the cooling system. I did read that running lean could cause overheating, so I am thinking maybe the pump could be doing it, just wanted to get any suggestions or ideas.

Thanks

could also be a stuck thermostat. It might not open all the way, so you may still see flow but not enough. Id also flush the entire system, and clean the radiator out of the car.

Ya, maybe I will just replace it to be on the safe side. When you say clean the radiator out of the car, what do you mean? Isn't that part of the flush?

Also has anyone messed with aftermarket temperature gauges? I got some Equus one, but can't find the right adapter for the engine. And does the ECU use the signal from the Temper Sender?

Thanks

well, untill it is fixed, keep your heat on full and the windows down(mine overheats a bit) and make sure all your hoses are in good condition

Had this problem with my '87. Ended up to be head gasket leaking exhaust into the coolant/radiator and creating lots of pressure. It would only do it at high speed (65 or better) and during the summer. Got through 2 summers easy on the pedal and turning on the heater when the head gasket started to leak through. No problem in winter. Then my wife borrowed the car one summer day and blew the radiator apart. DOA.
