Hi All,

I have an 87 Maxima SE that I'm going to install my system into. I need some advice about speakers though because I'm not sure what size speakers will fit the stock holes. Here is what I have now:

JL Audio 12W3 Prowedge Enclosure
Sony CDX 650-CA650X CD Head Unit
Sony XM-7527 bridged at 300W mono for sub enclosure
Sony XM-754HX amp at 4x75W for front and rear speakers
Phoenix Gold wires etc.

I took out the factory speakers and it looks like the fronts are 5.25" and the rears are 4". I removed the brackets from the rear deck and I think I could fit bigger speakers in there. The Crutchfield site says I can fit 6.5" speakers in the front doors with a little cutting. I would like to install 6.5" speakers in the rear deck as well. Does anyone know if these sizes will bolt right in? I don't mind cutting vinyl and plastic but I want to leave the sheetmetal intact.

Thanks,
Jeremy

You can fit oversize 6.5" speakers in the front, I think they are actually 6.75" speakers. As far as the back speakers are concerned, you won't be able to put 6.5" speakers in without cutting the metal, although you might be able to get the 5.25"s in.

That makes sense because the "What fits my car" tool on the Crutchfield site says I can go with 5.25" speakers in the rear but nothing larger is listed. Also, I'm getting ~100 Watts RMS per channel (~220 peak) and I can't find any 5.25" or 6.5" speakers that can handle that kind of power. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Jeremy

In my 88 max I bought image dynamics ctx6 speakers for the front doors. They are 6.5 inch and they bolted right in. I took my rear deck completely out and made a new one out of wood. I installed kicker resolution 5.25 inch speakers. All speakers are receiving 90-100 watts of rms power. I have low pass crossover set at about 110 hz and the speakers sound great. I dont think all 6.5 inch speakers will fit in the front but these image dynamicsspeakers fit right in.

OK, I went to local audio shop today and asked the guy about my setup and he said 6.5" is too big for the front and they will hit the windows. For the rears I can go with 6.5" no problem. They had a sound room where I could compare all of the speakers and I decided to go with Diamond Audio M351i's for the front and M361i's for the rear. They sounded deeper than the MB Quarts and the tweeters swivel so you can tune your soundstage. He quoted me $302 + tax for all 4 but I know I can get the whole set for about $100 cheaper over the Internet. I'll post more once I get the system all set up. This old 87 Maxima SE is going to pound! I haven't seen too many other 2nd gens that have 800 watt sounds systems, he he. Here are the specs on the speakers:

M361i

In my Max I use JBL P-532 5.25" speakers all the way around. They sound awesome as well! Definitely recommended!

Cheers!

Where can I see this 'image dynamic'? I installed a Kenwood OEM on mine and it is a bit big... Two of the screw hole match but he third one I had to wiggle and slant. It is a 3-way made for such replacement. the foam/rubber around the speaker is hitting the board on top of it.

Just took the 5.25 off and replace it with two-12 bazooka sub in a box.

I have an '87 GXE.

I installed 6.5's in the front and 6x9's in the rear.

I figured I was going to have to make cuts for the 6x9's, but when I got back there I had an idea.

I drilled 4 holes and mounted the 6x9's from the bottom (without the grills). Sounds excellent (I love infinity). I have the grills resting on top of the back panel for now. I plan on making my own grills that will fit right in the holes.

Wow, I'm surprised you fit 6x9s in the rear but if it works, more power to you. I ended up installing Diamond 351is in the front and Diamond 361is in the rear. Both front and rear speakers required drilling new holes and I also cut off the factory grills in the front and cut holes in the rear deck to make room for the bigger speakers. The system is so loud it's actually too much of a good thing. I can only go to about 3/4 volume before my ears start hurting. The bass hits incredibly hard too. I'm very happy with my system; guess the planning paid off.
