What is this noise?
As soon as I start my 86 Maxima it constantly makes a noise, i took it to get a oil change and the mechanic thought it was the water pump. Has anyone had this sort of noise and found out that it was the water pump? If so, how much will it cost to replace it? Thank You

Well, it certainly does depend on where the noise is coming from. All sorts of things can make noise, especially when they're about to fail. If it is coming from the drive belt area, then it probably is your water pump. You're looking at a pretty expensive job, probably in the neighborhood of $300. Pumps usually run about $80, but the job is very labor intensive. If you're due for a timing belt change, you might as well change all of the belts and tensioners, your thermostat, seals and gaskets, and do a complete flush and fill of the radiator. It's all in the same area as the water pump, so you shouldn't have to pay much more for the labor.

Re: What is this noise?
A mechanic's stethoscope is very helpful in locating noises. My guess is that you have a bad idler pulley. Loosen the drive belt to the water pump. Usually the shaft of the water pump will wobble or leak before they break off.
