this engine in piticular isnt ina a maxima but i know it set up in a similar way in maximas so i thought i would ask and mabe some one with a first gen is thinking the same thing.
simple question though:

the MAF on these engines is right up nead the outlet of the car and i was wondeirng if it would throw things off or hurt any thing if it were moved closer to the engine?

closer as in making the distance though the intake between the MAF and the intake of the engine it self shorter. kinda like just further up the pipe.

 

It's a pretty short trip as it is.

Moving it closer shouldn't have any adverse affects on engine operation.

changing the length and diameter of the intake changes the powerband and total output of the engine- just like tuning an exhaust.

If all you're doing is moving the MAF and keeping the overall intake length the same, then it shouldn't change anything as long as the MAF has a nice smooth flow into and out of it. turbulent flow from being just before/after a turn or restriction can cause errors in the readings.

 

The MAF is used so little in the bosch l jetronic system I wouldnt worry about it.

Just make sure your new setup dosent leak and it would be fine

 

for a sec i thought you said the maf was little which in the 79 its HUGE but upon closer inspection its acually mounted right to the TB so no issue there. it is strange though i test drove 2 Z's and i couldnt rember when i drove the first but both were 79's and one had a different intake manifold than the other and other than the color and one had an 8-track they were both the same car.
