Urgent need to replace door locks and ignition!!!!

I have an 87 Maxima

Someone broke into my car last night and I want to replace the door and ignition key holes. I found out that they got in with a copy of my key.

Is it also possible to add keyless entry to the car I think I've seen it done before.

Any other methods to remedy my problem would be greatly appreciated.

PLEASE HELP ASAP!!!

I'm pretty sure you can go to the Nissan dealership to get your locks and ignition replaced, though it's going to cost you. You can get a keyless entry system, though it won't solve your problem of someone else having a copy of your key. I'd suggest getting a Clifford alarm system that has the keyless entry option. They cost about $300-400 plus installation. Best Buy carries a few decent Clifford alarm systems, check them out. In the mean time, definitely go to the cops and let them know what happened. They can track down the previous owners of the car to see if they are responsible or know of anyone that has a key to your car. Also, a lot of dealerships have master keys to cars that will let them access any car. If any other 2nd gen Maximas were broken into with a copy of the key in your area, the police might be interested in investigating.

How do you know they had a copy?

Re: Urgent need to replace door locks and ignition!!!!

Instead of replacing both the ignition and door locks. Just replace
the door locks. It would be much cheaper. Use a key for the ignition
and a different keys for the door locks. Go to the junkyard some miles
away and try to get a locks and key from a recked 86-88 max and use
it to replace yours. Since you're not going to give them your address
it'll be almost impossible to track you down to rip you off. The
price would be less than $10 bones. Now that's priceless!!!!

Mike

P.S. Your standard alarm system should be fine since it has an
ignition cutoff switch. You can add a fuel cutoff switch to work with
your existing alarm system.

Do Junkyards keep the keys?

New set be $$$. Remove door cyls and take to locksmith $10>$25 have your old cyls re-coded. However steering lock is a btch! to remove you'll find two shear-off bolts to remove, U can buy new bolts at dealer or do without. Just do the doors. FYI All Nissans 1981>1998 (except Quest) share only 10,000 key code combos. And a worn out key/cyl....the odds of your key working in another Nissan are better than any lotto.

If you just change your door locks and don't change your ignition locks, all they'll have to do is bust a window and they'll be able to use the key that they have to start up the car and drive off. If I were in your shoes, I wouldn't take any chances, get all of the locks and the ignition replaced. It's much cheaper than replacing your whole car. The stock security system isn't going to go off if they break the windows since there isn't any sensors for them.
