86 Maxima Wagon intermitent run then dies

So I was on my way to work today when I started the vehicle and it died??? Started and it ran fine... On my way to work it would die then run die then run when cruising down the road... Pulled over and it dies. Start it up and it runs then goes into a series of on off on on on off on on off convulsions... So I check the connection on the coil and it looks OK, I can hear the fuel pump turn on and pressurize. So I leave it in the Safeway parking lot and my wife picks me up and off to work I go. Tomorrow I think I will bring a extra coil I happen to have switch it out after consulting the troubleshooting guide in the big book. Sound familiar to anyone???

Check all the connections to the battery, negative and positive. I had a loose wire and it did the same thing that you are describing.

Check the cps with a multi meter to confirm, and 31 has something to do with the ac/lights/fan/ps switch. gotta remember just because something looks good doesnt mean it is good.

You all and us 3rd gens should get together and start a story book of The Drama of a Maxima. Lol. How we chase our tails (when few of us find the solution) to be something simple, remote and stupid.

hahaha good idea. I just thought it might be a good idea to just re-engineer the car.

A couple things can cause this. First is the coil could be going bad. This usually presents itself after the engine and coil have heated it up. The CPS sensor in the distributor could be going bad. Also it would help to check the ground strap, as well as the fusible links/relays in the engine bay the relate to the ECU and ignition. It is possible they might be a bad relay, or a fusible link cracked enough to intermittently provide power.

Distributer cap and distributor can cause this also. Had my 87 in the shop for a month before they figured those were the problem. The scope readings found small distortion on peak and valley of readings is what I was told.
