Auto Trans rpm bounce

Auto Trans rpm bounce
My 1983 first gen Maxima sedan is an automatic and like my 1986 2nd gen wagon (automatic) I leave the electronic overdrive on all the time. I do realize that I can shut off the overdrive.
My concern is when I'm driving my 1st gen around town and I reach the speed of 35mph and try to drive a steady speed of 35mph, the tach/engine starts to bounce back and forth, approximately from 1500 to 2500 rpm repeatedly, that is until I press the accelerator. This doesn't happen in my 2nd gen. I wonder what is causing this to happen?!
Has anyone else shared the same experience?
Thank you.
Ernie
