Steering loss in curves.....

I have an 88' max GXE and when for instance I turn left from 12 o'clock and hold the curves at say 11 o'clock, suddenly I lose the force of the curve pushing back on the steering wheel and it unexpectedly will move further left to 10:30 or even 10 o'clock. I recently changed power steering pump, attempted to bleed while front raised, turning left to right several times not all the way to bump stops. Am I supposed to hold the wheel to right and left for 3 mins each or move the wheel l to r for 3 mins??

Research update...

A bit of research on this sounds like a long standing defect/problem in my rack.... Several people have indicated that their 2nd gens did this and replacing the rack & pinion fixed it finally.

Loose or worn ball joint. I slid sideways to a dead stop from 90 MPH because of this, in a Ford Escort. I'm just guessing that was the problem with the Escort, because I had the same issue with the Max and discovered the loose nut.
