Transmission upgrades?

Guys, I'm interested in looking at the possibilities of a 5 spd tranny swap in my 88 nissan. I saw AW11's work post last year and was impressed. Can someone help me to understand what my transmission options are and limited by what? How do I pick the latest model tranny that my 88 will work with? Anybody know of what other nissan's or gens will work?

with 3rd gens most people use the 5spd from a 1992-1994SE, however i believe you have to use the axles from that model and i dont know if you could make that work on a 2nd gen. otherwise the easiest straight swap might be finding a 2nd gen 5spd donor car

any of the 2-3rd gen VG trannys will be a direct swap the VE has larger axles, 85-86 will be geared higher the 3rd gen is geared the lowest but they also had larger tires

85-94 with the vg30 will work as posted. 85-88 are 3.428 final drive and 89-94 are 3.650 final drive. if you get an 89-94 youll need to do some minor cutting and welding for 1 mount, the clutch pedal, and also the speed senders are a different diameter so i had to tig 2 diffent ones together. in short, try to find an 85-88 trans donor car or youll have hell dowing the swap, ask me how i know lol! theres also some very minor wiring work that has to be done under the hood. 4 wires tho, that parts easy.
