Need a set of rear seat headrests for an '88 GXE wagon with gray velour interior. Not sure if sedan headrests were the same, I know SE's weren't. Also don't know if '87 wagon headrests were identical? Must be NOS or excellant condition used. Thanks

Hi,
Great wagon, glad to see my car's 'younger' brother! Sorry, I do not have definite knowledge about your need, but I hope my experience may help you, and I want to piggy-back my search onto yours.
From what I have seen, of advertised, photographed and actual Nissan Maxima wagons, including my own 1986, I have never seen one with rear headrests. So my impression was that they do not come with headrests, but perhaps it was an option, rarely ordered. My wagon has 4 round holes there, with black plastic plugs covering them; the plugs have become loose, and I have lost one (probably during a car vacuum+wash), and am just unable to find replacements anywhere! I also noticed that all 4 holes are simple round holes; I don't see a tube or sleeve inside (which I'd expect is needed to take the headrests' rods). More importantly, I don't see any clip/latch mechanism to hold the headrests at different heights/levels ... like the front seat headrests have. That makes me think it likely that the rear seats (of wagons) were not set up for headrests. But again, it could have been an option. Also, perhaps the rear headrests' (if any) height adjustment may be only by "friction", i.e. the rod being tight in there. Sedan owners can probably help us on this point; do their rear headrest holes have a clip/latch mechanism?
Hope the above helps and/or will bring more helpful comments.
Now for my question/ request: If the wagons do come with headrests (or sedans' will fit them), I too would like to get my hands on 2 for my 1986 Maxima in (dark) brown velour. And/or I would like to get the plastic plugs for the holes (mine are black, but any color will do).
Hi Paul...Thanks for your response. I think you are probably right about wagons not having rear seat headrests. Got hold of a parts book blow-up of the wagon rear seat and it makes no reference to headrests, but it does show holes and plugs that the book calls "eyelet-seat back, A". they are part code "86982", part number "86981-A0601". They originally sold for $2.71 ea. Even if headrests were an option, you'd assume they'd still be pictured in the illustration.
If my mind wasn't turning to mush in my old age, you'd think I'd be able to remember, as I bought an '87 wagon new back in the day. Silver Frost Metallic...loved that car. Had it less than two years before it went to live with the ex-wife, who totaled it several months later.
As regards your need for a brown velour set, I think there is a single brown headrest on Ebay right now. Lets agree to keep each other informed of what we find out. My email is dlloydc5a@gmail.com. Cheers
