Fuel pump 82 maxima or 85 maxima

A friend of mine gave me a 1982 Nissan Maxima just recently and I've taken upon to restore. The car was parked 3 years ago in august, and we jumped it off and I drove it home not with out a couple of stalls and stops we did add new gas on top of the old gas mind you 3 years old (oh the smell) car has 144k on it and other than the rats nest and sunbleached interior the cars doesn't have a scratch on it. After replacing the plugs, wires, thermostat, clutch slave, alternator, battery, some belts, hoses, vacum lines, distributor cap, rotor button, fuel filter, oil, and filter, air filter, etc the car idles great now but will not rev at all period so by process I have determind that it is most likely the fuel pump so, I have restored a couple of older cars in the past 1st place to look is in the trunk. There is the access panel but according to Nissan in 82 the fuel pump was not in the tank it was mounted under the tank but not in this one. After more investagating I have found that in 85 they were installed in the tank simulair to mine well no one has them in stock and I have to pay for it first and I refuse to pay for a part that will not be returned because of special order and it not work any help please

Re: vacum lines

I would be inclined to replace the fuel pressure regulator. It is a cheap item and easy to get to. Also, check your air flow meter for good opperation and also the throttle position sensor. (on the side of the throttle body)

That is very strange that your fuel pump is inside. Maybe someone rigged that up custom because they bought the wrong pump? They should be on the outside just like the 280ZX.

Thanks alot I will do that I work 12 hour shifts and don't get to play with it as much as I would like. Thursday I am off work and hope to get around to put a fuel pressure regulator on I have seen where it is at and the pump is factory or a perfect cut out for it in the trunk and tank. I've ran across some hard items before but no one can tell me why this is like this. the dealer said bring the old one in and they I would try to match it but I haven't had a chance to go by there. Thanks for the tip. I here these cars are also really picky on the vacum lines also.

Well i replaced the Fuel pressure regulator and it seems to run alittle better like I said the car had set up for almost 3 years and the gas was turpintine we added to it instead of draining it and while I was replacing the FPR I decided to go ahead and drain the tank and add new fresh fuel with and injector cleaners and gas treatment but of course not to much and fill it up from the trunk well after further inspection the tank has alittle more rust in it than I care to leave so I am going to look into dropping the tank and having it cleaned and coated. I hope this will fix the problem replace FPR, cleaning the injectors and tank.
