damn, sucks!! How'd you do it, if you dont mind me asking? Those VTC assemblies still work? I might be interested in buying them evn if they're brok, just to fool around with them and figure out how they work so I can understand them more. Maybe rebuild them... who knows.

I was driving down the freeway at 125mph....in 5th gear....I know thats hard on the motor, but shouldnt have thrown a rod....this is a maxima engine here....they take abuse...hehe...at least most of em.....everyone swears I must have ran it out of oil, or threw it in 2nd gear at 100mph....I didnt over rev it and it had plenty of oil....so u tell me hehe
oh and by the VTC assmebbelies are OK, I didnt notice the ticking on them before the motor went out....

how many miles were on the motor when it blew? sounds like a freak occurence!! My old '84 Celica had a 22RE (2.4 liter 4 cylinder motor used mostly in the toyota trucks) and that thing had rod bearing knock for over a YEAR under no-load conditions. Finally one day it spun the #1 rod bearing and I ended up rebuilding the motor in my apartment (where no car maintenance is allowed!) They finally caught me when I was dropping the rebuilt motor back in, but I was moving out in a week, so they couldn't do anything about it LOL. I might be interestd in the VTC's, depending on mileage.

The motor had just a little over 150,000 when it threw a rod, however the last owner had just redone the valves 6 months before this happened.....and I think he had the VTC worked on, however I cant be positive on that, I know it didnt make that ticking noise caused by the VTC's so I know they are good still.....

Hehe...My VG has a rod knock..and lifter tick...177k on it. Im expecting a rod thru the block and/or lifters completely collapsing before end of jan. next year
Then again..this motor had 1/2" of sludge on the lifter assemblies and in the oil pan; cleaned it out, makes more noise now.
Im gona have an extra low mileage motor ready

VTC's

Alright, if the previous owner had VTC work done, any way you can find out if they are rebuilt or new assemblies? Or maybe they just grounded out the VTC solenoid to get rid of the ticking noise? and how many miles/years between you buying the '92 and now?

I bought the car in may of 2000 with 150,500 miles, the motor went out 2 weeks later at 151,900.....I know the VTC were NOT grounded....I could call the guy that I bought it from who was the original owner since it was new.....

my car

Same thing happened to my car recently at 150,000.... I didn't throw the rod; I caught it while it was still just a rod knock. I hope these engines go farther than 150K (VE30DE) I am fixing it over Christmas break.

I called the original owner, and he said that in 1994 there was a recall for the VTC assembalies, So he took it in and they replaced them....maybe there used to be a recall for this since they are a problem....he said they were replaced in 1994....I know from my own expierience they were fine, even when from a cold start in the morn. they didnt make any noise......just let me know if u want them, we can work out a deal since they just take up space here and I dont need them.......Matt
