I have done a bit of research on how to rebuild the vg engine, what parts to put in, and so on. My problem is inexperience. I've never done internal engine work. If I had an extra vg30 that I kept on a stand, and the right tools, would it be possible for a newbie like me to break down the engine, have some parts machined, and then put it back together with new parts? The reason for this is that I really want to learn as much as possible about the engine, while making it faster. I would of course buy a FSM and have the actual engine swap done by a shop. Is this going to be a project or repair? Otherwise it would be more cost effective to buy a used VG30E. Once you get the FSM and the engine stand all you will need to tear the motor down is the proper tools. If you have a spare engine that is the best way to go. Also make sure you read the FSM at least twice all the way through in the EM section. That way you have a great idea of what your doing and you won't miss something as easily.
it's for a project, and I plan to buy a used vg30e, motorsport 280 cams, vg30de pistons and a JWT ECU, and swap them in. Where I am a little hazy is what to do about the other parts. I seem to remember that the vg30e internals are forged, and that all I would have to do is have them balanced, and they would be good for 7500 rpm. I would also replace the seals and gaskets and port and polish the heads and maybe intake and exhaust manifolds. Then bore out the throttle body and put it back together. I think that Turbo95max will put the new engine in, and I should be set to go. Any flaws in this, or something that I should be doing? (btw, this is what I gathered from reading every engine swap post in the forum

There's a saying that says "Having the right tools is half the job." And I believe that's true.
don't forget you will need higher rev valve springs and retainers. I believe motorsport or ISKY sells the higher rev valve springs/retainers.

If you have the money, I'd try to spend a little more on the internals and then you'd get greater benefits. I seem to remember someone getting titanium rods from some place (I might be wrong). Also, if you got some pistons that bumped the compression ratio up to about 10.5, it would help a lot too. You can also have both manifolds and the heads extrude honed and ported. Though, the VG heads are already pretty good. All these little things can really help to get some good horsepower out of the engine.
