I have really been happy with Redline oil and since my car has 80k miles, I thought I should put new oil in the tranny. Anyone use Redline in their Max? If so, what viscosity? Will MTL work?

Also - my tranny makes a whining noise in 1st - is this normal? It's not loud, but I can definitely hear it.

Thanks,

Jacob

I deem it best to use redline in your 5spd. MTL90 Weight.
Anything else is a substitute.

I use Redline. I like it. The only thing I didn't know is how often it should be changed. I thought about having it changed around January, that would make it about a year.

Use it

I have MTL in my Max. I think it took 5 qts. A good chunk of change, but of course, if you swap it yourself (and I know you can), it's worth it. It was very easy to change the fluid. The drain hole is kinda hidden, facing the passenger side of the car on the side of the tranny (right under the motor). The filler hole is a big one that you can open by using a 1/2" ratchet (no socket, it's a square hole). I used a cheap fluid pump to pump it in, worked great

I also have the gear whine in 1st gear, Redline didn't help at all. It's probably normal wear and tear. No worries

Depends on where you live

I get mine at the Toyota dealer's TRD section. Always have. They also have it at Napa here (in Cali).

I'll go get some.

How do you change that gear oil in a 5spd. I want to start using Redline but don't know how to change it. I'm sure it's really easy. If someone could tell me how to or has it posted on a website, hook me up!

If you've never worked on a manual tranny before, I'd have someone else change the oil. It's not as straight forward as an automatic! There are several bolts and stuff under there you don't want to take loose, or it will be in the shop! And I was told by my tranny Mech. that there is a divivder or something in the tranny that you have to make sure the fluid gets to both sides on refill or you'll rob fluid from portions of the tranny. I took mine to Walmart first (mistake!) they couldn't even find the drain plug! I told them to stop before the fu@#$d something up!

So you pretty much have to order the stuff to get it. What exactly do I need now?

Hmm, someone mentioned that

the redline was much better than the amsoil gear oil, since I put amsoil in the engine and have been very satisfied I was gonna go with amsoil gear oil too, but now I might have to go with redline instead....
