Need Transmission Rebuilt -What to expect
Need Transmission Rebuilt -What to expect
I have a 93 Se 5sp with 150k miles on it.
I need to get the trans rebuilt.
Dealer (Bob Sharp Nissan) in Wilton CT gave a rough quote of 1,500 bucks.
They would rebuild my existing trans in the car vs completely pulling it out or replacing with an existing rebuilt.
My question:
What should i expect them to replace, rebuild?
Just the bearings or ?
Anything I should consider replacing while they have it "opened up"?
Thanks

i dunno what kind of driver you are but i would change stock parts with performance parts (i.e. clutch, flywheel). they aren't that much more expensive if you're paying dealer prices on the stock parts. ask the guy working on your car how much cheaper it would be if you provided him with some parts. definately shop around. dont' forget the throw out bearing. those are cheap but get really annoying when they're worn and rattle. good luck.
Find a local transmission shop to do the job. it should be under $1k for the whole mess, plus the price of a new clutch.
(and you should ALWAYS replace the throwout bearing when changing clutches)

Yeah,
I put in a new clutch and t/o bearing at 120k miles.
will shop the job at some local shops.
this is a daily driver that is on its way as a project car
for one of my sons. frame up re-power/tune for racing performance is the objective. Should start that end of 2002 project wrapped up by dec-2003.
thanks

Personally, if i had 5-speed tranny problems, I would just replace it with a used (low mile) tranny. The Nissan manual tranmissions don't seem to give problems, it's the automatics you have to be careful about. In NY, you can replace a manual tranny about two times for the life of the car and still not have paid the amount it would cost to rebuild in the first place.
