Hello all, I have been hearing a lot about our auto trannies busting. It seems like every time I get online I hear of a new tranny problem. We have all come to the conclusion that the 3rd gen Max auto trannies are ****!! From what I have read, it costs anywhere from $1-$2g's to rebuild a tranny with install, etc. My question is, why aren't these people converting there car to a 5spd?? Wouldn't it cost about the same or maybe less to convert?? I don't have any auto tranny problems at all, but I would like to know that if it ever busts that I can convert.

What needs to be done to convert an auto to 5spd?? I figure the labor would cost the most.

Can someone please shed some light?

Take care,
ICE

On a 3-gen, the DIY mechanic would spend probably towards $1500 to $2500. If you have to pay someone add $1000. For that I would sell the automax and get a 5-sp one. If you auto is okay consider getting Don's valve body recalibration for $450 or so. I think it's avail for the VE 3-gens. I would consider getting this mod BEFORE you start having tranny trouble.
