Cruise/Fog/Power mirror switches

I *did* do a search on this first and found some info, but I don't know if it's gonna help me any..

The problem is that my dimmer switch and rear defroster switch light up at night. However, the cruise, power mirror, and foglight switches don't. I don't think it's a blown fuse, because then all of the lights would be out, right? But it's just the ones to the left of the steering wheel...

Now in my search, I ran across a guy who had broken the bulb inside one of his switches. I suppose this could be the answer, but I wanted to make sure there's not something else that could be the problem.

You know i have the same problem except none of min light up except for the power mirror switch and my dimmer switch doesn even dim the lights. I checked the bulbs but they looked fine. Should i go ahead and replace them anyways?

you can take them out and go to radio shack and buy the little mini bulbs to replace them with. Do your search on mini bulbs or something like that maybe add radio shack into the search. Craig posted the part numbers for these bulbs in one of those threads. I got some before but I am sorry I cant remember the part numbers.

oh and dont worry the bulbs from radio shack are a little smaller than some of those bulbs but they work fine.

Good luck.

nstymax93-yes replace them...I had a lot of those bulbs that went out (6 all to gether I think) and all of the bulbs I pulled out looked fine even though they didn't work.

That's the correct part number (I still have some left).

Yeah very easy to replace those little bulbs. I've had to do my side mirror defroster switch and the Power/Comfort tranny switch.

However, The bulb on my cruise control button doesn't work anymore, but my cruise control works fine, and it doesn't look like you can get to that bulb without completely disassembling the entire switch. Anyone ever replace the bulb for that one? If so, I'd love to know how you did it.

for cruise and a few other switches, you'll have to remove the switch, then pop the cover off it (and watch where all the little pieces inside go)
once it's open, you can see how the bulb goes in and just replace it with a new one

I don't know if that's worth it for the cruise control button, but good to know it can be done.

I've just finished replacing all the burned out bulbs in my dash buttons (fog, dimmer, cruise, defroster, mirror heat & those fresh air toggle thingie on the left of the heater controls). Now my dash lights up at night like Tokyo Bay at night once more! What a beautiful sight...

Anyway, the process was more painful than I expected. It seems that every two bulbs I replace, one more failed to light up. I had to take apart the dash panel and put it back together three times! Also, everytime I had to take apart one of the switches to access the bulb inside, they seem to like to 'explode' open sending parts flying everywhere. I had to guess how to put them back together again. Murphy's law rearing its ugly head... Thankfully all the switches worked now, so I must've guessed right!

BTW, they all use the 272-1092 bulbs. In the end I had to buy 10 of them (5 packs)! Also if anyone's interested in doing the same, I suggest having a needle (or something equally small) nearby to help remove the old bulbs from their rubber sockets.

Oh, also the power mirror lights does not seem to be lighted, as there's no evidence of bulbs (or places to put them in) behind the L/R marking.

bulbs changed!

i was in the middle of resoldering the clock on my Max when i came across this thread...so i said hey why not....

i had 4 switches that would never light up...i got em all done...even the Hazard switch...piece o'cake.

yeah they tend to scatter parts all over the place once u open the switches, but they're prety easy to assemble back

the needle was definitely helpful...

NEXT STEP= i will try to change the entire illumination inside the dash to red..just like my aunt's BMW 5 series ...i just need to find some red bulbs instead of plain old transparent ones....anyone has any ideas or suggestions where i can find some?
thanks

I dont know if that's gonna be very easy to do. I'm pretty sure most of the bulbs didn't have any "condoms" or anything covering them. They are originally white but then the translucent part of the switch is tinted and gives them the color.
I could be wrong, but I think that's the case.

yeah craig....i have the defog switch and the cruise control switch open in front of me and they have an independent piece of green "tinted' transparent plastic behind the face of the switch that gives it the green color...

it does look difficult to get them out...but if i can find red tinted plastic somehow....or red bulbs, i'd take the green pieces out!

i'm gonna keep looking
