[B]Does anyone know the symptoms of a bad PCV valve?
PCV valve draws off bypass gases so pressure does not build up in crank case. If it were stuck open it could cause erratic idle and if stuck closed oil leaks. It is very easy to get it out and replace,
clean or check it for operation. It is basically a one way check valve and cost about $3.00 at a parts store.

Maybe easy on a VG but not easy on a VE.

In the service manual, the 2 possible side effects of having a bad PCV Valve is inconsistent idling and oil leaks. I don't think that installing a new PCV valve will fix the oil leak but(after you repair the oil leak) it will help keep an oil leak from happening again.
