Power loss and odometer problem
Hi all,
I have a 92 maxima, automatic with 130,000 miles. When I moved from california to Minnesota 2 yrs back in summer the car used to shudder when I started it and idle really hard and the engine check light used to come on. Then once I started to drive it used to go away and be normal. This problem was intermittent initially and got alright. I got new fuel injectors.
Then I moved back to California last year and this problem came back and the engine light is ON permanently with hard engine and huge loss of power. Along with this the speedometer stopped working, just went dead. The fuel gauge and the RPM meter works but the speedometer with the milage do not. I dont know if these two problems are related. The mechanic told me to do a full tune up with new fuel filter which I had him do last year. Still didnt fix the problem completely. I added Chevron fuel injector cleaner couple of times and didnt fix it either.
The same mechanic said I had to replace the whole speedometer and would cost about $600-700. I have been driving like this since the problem occered last year without any other problems, but dont relly enjoy driving.
As you may have guessed, I dont work with cars. I need some advice on what to replace / servcice to fix these problems. Any inputs from you would really help. I have already spent enough money on this. Thank you very much.

Re: Power loss and odometer problem
If your engine light is on, you can just take it to a nissan dealer and they'll be able to read codes from the ecu.
The mechanic that quoted you $600-700 for a speedometer sounds pretty ignorant. It could be your speed sensor is the problem, and not your speedometer. If your speedometer is the actual culprit then you can go to a junk yard and get a complete gauge cluster for less than $85, some people have them on e-bay for less.
His suggestion also to do a full tune up sounds as though he wants to collect the money for the tune up, but doesn't want to properly diagnose the problem. A tune up coule very well solve the power loss, but as for the engine light, you would have to check the ecu to see what problem(s) it recorded.
In a case such as yours where you aren't too car savvy, I would suggest you take it to a Nissan dealer and not just a regular auto shop.
