trashed tranny?

Here's the deal-
Last year, right about this time, my girlfriend got her first car. Just so happens it was a Gen3 Maxima with around 100K on it. (Definitely a sweet ride). It's been behaving great except that it developed an intermittent shaking/power loss on acceleration that we were blaming on plug wires getting too close to the block and sparking, causing misfires. Problem persisted, but wasn't a huge deal. But...
Over the weekend she was driving it with me in the car and the car bucked seriously and then started shifting late. (It's an auto...blaah.) And this happend withing the first half mile of sub-40MPH driving in cold weather. It kept on doing this reluctant-shifting thing for the next 10 minutes, but the fund didn't start until she had to back up to get away from a curb she had parked next to. Tried to shift from park to reverse....damn thing revs but doesn't move an inch. It was as if she still had it in park. So in the end we drove it home, forward gears shifting around 5K RPMs no matter how lightly she worked the throttle, and she hasn't been driving the thing ever since. It's at her mechanic's place as I type, waiting to be looked at.
So...I have no clue what's going on here. I know my manual tranny pretty much inside and out, but know only the basics about her auto. Can anyone tell me what might be going on here? Could this be related to that problem she was having before? Thanks in advance for any info, and sorry for the long post.

TRANNY IS SHOT..........
Those were the same symptoms of my 2md and 3rd rebuilds!!! only thing can say is rebuild time!! seems like the reverse clutch bands are f'ed up(somebody told me this before), just find a reputible shop and rebuild company and go from there!! don't forget to get an auxiliary cooler put in after the new rebuild and only use fluid with Dextron III!!!! good luck!

More like where all of the "auto" [tranny] people hang out. At the transmission specialists. Oh well, I used to be in the get a new clutch club quite often until some dipsh!t rear ended my 90SE which I no longer have because its totaled. The 90SE is the car in my sig...I also have a 92GXE slushbox with a "somewhat" weak tranny, but I don't drive that too hard (at least no loke my 90SE 5spd).

thanks...
I appreciate the input. Sounds pretty grim, but sometimes the truth just sucks, eh? On the other hand, at least it aint my car .
Tim..."Damn good thing my old, slow Volvo's easy to work on..."
P.S.- As much as this does apply to me, maybe you guys'll get at least a good chuckle out of this one. My brick's similar to the second pic down on the page. (But not that fast.) http://www.mcbrooms.com/volvo/
