Tranny trouble

I just joined up. Thank God...finally I don't have to hear about Hondas anymore. Long live the MAX. I have a problem, I hope some can shed some light on it. I have a 1992 SE auto. I've notice that when I change from Park to drive the gear doesn't engage. I have to tap back on the gear shift in order for it to change. Thats not the only problem, after I tap back on it, when I'm driving the car would change from 1st to 2nd fine, but when it goes from 2nd to 3rd the rpms increase almost by 1000 before it changes gear.

Hold on....thats not the only thing. If I change from Park down to 1st then to "D" the car doesn't delay in changing from 2nd to 3rd, the gear changes are smooth. Please if anyone can help me, I would greatly appreciate it. thanks Nmax92

I'm new to this forum also so I don't have the insight others probably have but it sounds as though you have the same issue I had with my 1992 SE automatic -- that plastic bushings are worn on the shifter linkage. This is a very inexpensive and easy repair for the do-it-yourselfer. Just search on "bushing" "shifter" "plastic" for more info.

You shifter selector bushing is bad. Common problem in Auto Maximas. Do a search on "shifter bushing" and you will get a lot. It's a pretty simple job and cheap.

As for the problem with actual shifting, others will have to shed some light on that. It sounded like your tranny was slipping into 3rd gear, but then you said that it doesn't do that when you shift to 1st gear first and then into drive. I don't have a clue.

Hey thanks for the info, it was definitely the bushing, I fixed it in 5 min. Do you know anything about the climate control in your max. In mine, when I turn on the windshield defogger I get cold air coming from the front vents (the vents that blow towards the cabin, next to the clock). Is that normal?

I believe that is normal. In that defogger mode the air compressor is activated to help dehumidify the cabin air. Just open the hood and check, you will see the a/c compressor kick in.
