My old max had the same problem. I switched out the thermoresistor, but that did no good. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. Since my parents gave the car to my sister, I'm not sure if it is an issue still, but I have to imagine it is. Take comfort in knowing that the ecu gets its temp reading from a separate thermoresistor, so except for the fact that its acts whacky for you, the ecu should still be getting a good signal, assuming, of course, that that thermoresistor works.

yea been there done that

there are 2 sensors one for the ecu and one for the gauge so you can start there they are both pretty old so it will not hurt to replace the 2 ,but foor you problem just get the one for the gauge (be very careful with the sensors they are brass and if you tighten them 2 much you will break them off and that is not kool)if that is not the answer to your problems them get out you r wallet its the gage and its like $150 ,but if you dont mind a little work you mabe able to find one on a car in the wrecking yard .By the way the temp gauge and fuel gage are all one pice so be careful.

I had the same problem for a good while. Replace the guage to correct the problem.
