$64,000 Question...
$64,000 Question...
Now...I've owned my '89 Maxima since it was new and I have a question that has never been answered for me in the intervening 14 years. Here goes...What in heck is that thing on the forward portion of the trunk floor? It's the damndest thing... I cannot for the life of me figure out what the hell it's purpose is. It is covered by a separate carpet cover and while I was adding a center armrest pass-thru (back in 1990, mind you) I was baffled at it's existence. I've had the factory manual since the first week I owned the car, and no mention of it at all!
Then I just forgot about it and just took it for granted. Then yesterday, my daughter asked me: " What is that for?". I figure if I can find out it's reason for living anywhere, it would be on this site.
Thanks!
The noise he's hearing has gotta be the antenna motor.
BUT, on some maximas there is a large weight that is located behind the back seat, its in the shape of a cylinder. My friends 91se has (or had) one, It was just intended to add more weight to the rear end, I'm guessing to help prevent fish tailing or something to do with drivability.
The weight must be about 40 pounds. I think its okay to remove if you have a lot of stero equipment in the trunk. When removing the nuts, the bolts underneath the car will fall, so I reccomend grabbing them before they fall into a cavity that cannot be reached, or just seal the holes with rubber silicon.
O yeah, there are no power wires to this thing, its just a weight. So you are probably noticing the wiring harnesses for the lights and stuff powered in the trunk.
