problems... and lots of it

yeah, i own a 1989 maxima gxe. i just got it recently from my dad because he couldn't "handle" it anymore. when i took a look at it, it was a mess.

he never took care of the car; everything is just a mess. the interior was so dingy and the leather upholstery ripped in numerous spots.

but here are my main concerns about this car:

*windshield shattered (i can fix this though)
*electronic dash doesn't work
*clock doesn't work (but if you're lucky and hit the dash hard enough, it'll sputter in and out)
*air-conditioner doesn't work (but its the same as the clock; hit it and it'll work for a bit)
*radio doesn't work
*alarm doesn't work anymore
*radiator fans doesn't work

i took the whole dashboard apart and looked at everything. nothing seemed to be burnt out. checked the clock and air-con and the connections. checked the electronic dash. nothing.

i'm thinking its the electronics. i checked the fuses and relays and circuit breakers and everything, even the cabling. but i don't see anything wrong with it. its driving me nuts! any suggestions?

As for the clock, there is a fix for that. Go to the 'How To' section at:

http://www.prism.gatech.edu/~gte671n/mymax.html

That will tell you how to resolder the clock. As for the digital dash, those things are prone to go bad. Hopefully someone else will chime in with some insite.

if you cant find any help with the gauges, you can ask around, im sure someones got some extra GXE gauges. might even be able to track down some SE's.

as for the A/C, ive never had to mess with mine, but try resoldering something if you can. it seems like its the same problem.

for your radiator fans, mine only came on when the car would sit and idle for a while, if they arent coming on at all, my guess would be that again, might need to resolder some connections or just push in the plugs to the fans and make sure they are tight. oh yeah, might check the relays for them too. im not sure how to explain it though.

radio- gonna have to be alittle more specific, you could try replacing a fuse though.

alarm- fuse again? my alarm would prevent anyone from getting in my car. it was stock. the only way to do it was to unlock the passanger side then walk around and get in (double over to unlock all the doors).

hope to help

ok your radiator fans have the same problem as mine. i assume you have the digital climate control. if not, then this doesnt apply to you.

My radiator fans wouldnt work either, and my climate control only worked after a few good punches. BUT....the radiator fans ALWAYS worked when the climate control was working. i ended up getting a used Climater control (cc) unit from a used parts dealer. and that fixed the radiator fan for good. but after a few weeks of perfect operation, the CC unit started to have the dimming problem like all the other 3rd Gen CCs.

There are two possible problems...i had BOTH....ONE, you have a bad ground in your wiring at the back of the CC, (only needs to have the ground wire changed/fixed)...TWO, you have a bad solder joint inside the CC circuitry. MAxima.org user "martin" fixed his recently...he may have a picture of the bad joint.
