Stock intake pipe question

Being somewhat bored this Saturday, I decided to experiment with my OSCAI a little bit. I removed the intake pipe on the non-MAF sensor side of the airbox, and was surprised to see a curved plastic tube branch off from the main intake pipe, and curve down through a hole in the body.

The tube is about a foot long, has an o-ring/rubber gasket about 6" away from the main intake tube, and is completely sealed, save for a small screw hole at the very end?

What's the function of this secondary tubing? Some sort of moisture/debris catch prior to the airbox filter?

Re: Stock intake pipe question

I've heard it is a resonator of some sort.

Interesting. The black box that's attached under the stock intake tubing on the MAF side of the airbox serves roughly the same purpose, if I remember correctly, namely noise dampening, and little (if anything?) else...

Is there any harm in trimming away the boxy resonator from the base of the pipe, then sealing the gap? If nothing else, I assume it'd make the engine sound louder?

id think it would just help the flow, but make induction noise a little greater. just make sure whatever you seal it with isnt gonna get sucked away and destroy ur maf sensor.
