I just can't stop thinking about nissan falling off the cliff!
Why would they change the 3rd gen to the 4th gen so differently like that
. If anything they should of kept the same general design but slight changes. The 5th gen should look like a skyline R35 but with 4 doors. Instead they make the 4th gen look like a 3rd gen having a allergic reaction to a bee sting(All Puffed up and bubble)

I'm glad someone else agrees! Did Nissan change management or any people in important positions around the time the 4th gen came out. Personally, the 3rd gen is the ONLY Maxima for me. I have nothing against 4th gens or any other gen Maximas though, I have EVERYTHING against Nissan for f*cking up a good thing! You know what it is, design/art schools! There must have been a new "wave" of automotive design experts that just graduated around '94 or '95, because that's when it seems most car manufacturers changed their body designs for the worst rather than the best. For example, I love BMW's but the new ones are just a little too damn round for me. Too bad the damage has already been done. I don't think Nissan will ever bring back that bimmer look. Can you just imagine a more revised 3rd gen design (slightly bigger, more aggressive, etc) with the new 255hp Vq35?! I think we should find out who is/was in charge of automotive design at Nissan, when all this happened, and give them a beating!

Design
I agree I love the 3rd Gen the best. I do see the chances car makers have to take on maintaining a "fresh edge" to their lineup in order to get new customers. Sometimes it's a hit and sometimes it's a miss.
That is why I decided that this would be my last Max. I love the power they are putting into th car, but the designs don't mov me as much.

I agree as well. Back in January 1995 I was helping my parents pick out a Max. I could have chosen a 95 GXE, but decided on a slightly used 94 SE instead. I just did not like the way the 4th gen looked at the time (too bubbly and round, they look ok to me now) and I loved the way the 3rd gens looked. I always liked the way the 3rd gen design looked ever since I first saw one, whereas the 4th and 5th gen styles had to grow on me. No regrets at all 7 years later. I still want a 02-03 Maxima SE, but I'll never give up my 94 SE.

So it's decided then... we're gonna "bum-rush" Nissan corporate HQ, and demand that they make a "retro" version of the 3rd Gen, kinda like how they did with the Cutlass supreme, back in the 80's when they changed body styles...

how hot would that be if Nissan came out with a brand new #rd gen. SAME EXACT body style...just a 250+ hp engine, 6-spd manual, slightly modernized interior (stereo, navigation?..etc) and stock 17" rims. i would go take out a loan right now for that *hit...oh god, my pants are getting tight...

Maxima Phase Out
I wonder if the acquisition by Renault has anything to do with this. Although Nissan seemed to be de-emphasizing the Maxima before the purchase and bringing on the Altima to take its' place. The Altima is a nice car with more mass appeal, like the Accord or Camry. Its too bad they can't figure out how to do both; sell the mass appeal Altima and hang on to the reasonably priced sport sedan niche they own. I'm about to think about a new car and after the wonderful experience I've had with the '92 SE I'd really love to get another Maxima. The only downside would be the inexplicable non-independant rear axle (what WERE they thinking?).

Don't get me wrong, I loved my 3rd gen until everything started crapping out. My 3rd gen was a perfect example of a never ending money pit. Just recently I had to dish out 2400$ in order for it to be in a "selling" condition. Still isn't sold yet...93 5sp fully loaded w/120K.
Looking back, I probably would of never bought the 3rd gen

But that's just my bad luck story, other than that you guys have some awsome looking rides.

Well, it seems a majority of 3rd gen owners are older people or used more as family cars than an actual sports/touring sedan, and not taken care of like they should be. Don't get me wrong though, I love all kinds of Maximas!
I recently had a chance to test drive a 98se 5spd and just let me say, it was damn nice (black w/ black leather)! Pretty powerful as well. I'm just more partial to the bimmer design.
