Passenger Side CV Joint

Is there a trick to removing this thing? I took out the 3 bearing support bolts, then I tried to pull it out really hard, but I can't get it to budge. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

ONce you take those ball joint bolts out and the center hub nut the strut/brake assembly will move out of the way you might have to tap on the axle end with a hammer AND a BRASS punch so you dont mess up the end of the shaft. If its the outer joint you want undo the cv boot and tap gently on the cv joint untill it pops off of the axle then youre set

Hmmm... you did take the axle nut off right?

There's a c-clip that holds it in. You just need to overcome the force. I wouldn't suggest pulling it too hard. Get a large flathead screwdriver or something similar, and try to pry it out from the tranny.

the bearing support/girdle is stuck to the car. take a hammer..get some liquid wrench. tap the support on the axle half. tap it so it starts to spin or move. once that happens u can get a screwdriver in there to pry it apart. once it's pretty much out u can get back out and pull the axle and it'll move.

Thanks Dan,

I got it to move, but I can't get enough of a gap to get anything in there.

There a b#@##@#@th to get out , Well atleast on my car it was ... You can ethier pull like hell and hope it comes loose , or take the drivers side out and drive a punch threw to release the passenger side ...As its hollow , (drivers side pops out easy with a fork)

I had the same thing with the bearing being stuck in its support. I was trying to beat it out with an air hammer and then i used a straight pry bar and a BFH in between the bearing support and the axle. After about 45 minutes of cursing it finally came out. I just had my axles out (came out with only 5 minutes of cursing) again when i did my clutch and i didn't notice any C-clips on either the new one i put in or the old one i took out on the passenger side. I have limited slip on mine and the they may differ from tranny to tranny.

Good news:

I got the axle out. I hit it enough that it rotated to where I could use one of the support "ears" that the bolts go through to bear up against. So I used the pole from my jack as a punch that I lodged between the engine support beam and the y-pipe, and a hammer to beat it out.

Bad news:
The replacement axle from autozone is the wrong part. The section between the support bearing and the axle is too long. I tried to put it in first, and then I took it out and laid it next to the old one. And it is about 2 inches longer.

If it's only the boots that are bad, they're real easy (and cheap) to replace. I had same problem with getting wrong axle (twice). My CV's were OK, though.

Went back and matched them up. The part was wrong. I exchanged it for the one that (they say) is for the auto, and it fits perfectly. Their part numbers are probably switched in the computer.

Yes and no. Actually I only did the passenger side. But as I was putting the new axle in, I pulled on it to hard and separated the inner section. I had to take it apart and reassemble it. If I would have been a little more careful, then it would have been a breeze.
