hey, i'm thinking about getting an 89 max. I will have to replace the front struts. The question i have is will i need a spring compresser to put the struts on?? What i'm saying is do the springs coil around the strut or are they placed somewhere else??

thanks

Yes a spring compressor is needed to get the old springs off the strut and to install them onto the new strut. Don't try to do it w/o these. Dangerous not to! Rent them at a tool shop. Just a few bucks. Good Luck!

Yes a spring compressor is a necesity. You have to compress it to get the cap off of the top of the strut, and then put it on the new strut put the top on and decompress it.

If you don't know the answer to your own question, then you probably shouldn't do it yourself. Not to undermine your intelligence or ability at all, but suspention work like that is dangerous and at the very least you should probably have someone with a lot of experience helping you. You are more then likely capable, I'm sure, but I've seen them fly out of compressors across entire shops and almost take my friend's head off! If it's your first time, and it sounds like it is, have a friend or someone else with experience help you so you can see exactly what the proper ways of doing it are. You can rent a spring compressor from Auto Zone or whatever, but a wall mounted unit or something similar to what you would find at a professional shop would be safer. Get some help so you can do it right and know the safe way for next time. Just a little advise from someone that almost killed someone else trying to save a few bucks and do it himself! Good luck! You CAN do it.
