I think Ball joints are gone need HELP

My 89 GXE handles like Cr*p. Now the snow will be coming soon and I am worried if it would be driveable. The steering wheel has a lot of play in it. I have changed the control arm bushings and tie rods on my audi quattro before and was wondering if the ball joint replacement is a DIY kind of thing. I wanna know how I can check it and if this is indeed the problem. What else could be causing poor handling. PLease help.

Thanks

Sohaib.

do some searching on "ball joint". it's a pretty common problem and a fairly easy DIY job, if you've got a decent set of hand tools.
