Ok....my dealer is pretty cool. Next time I get a syn oil change I'm gonna have em bump up the timing to 18-19 BTC. I already run Mobil 93 so I'm not worried about pinging. What kind of gains can I expect? Low, high or both? I've ruled out spending 500 for a jwt ecu(10hp) cuz I need to save for my vq 5sp BUT I figure that adv. timing would complement my intake and Y nicely....atleast get me to 16.4....probably not even that quick!

the timing advance may give a little more SOTP feel (seat of the pants) but its not very dramatic. But since its like almost free its worth doing

Some more questions...

I was also wondering about advancing the timing. Where do you feel the SOTP gain? Is it in the low or top end? Does it improve gas mileage??

Thanks,
ICE

Top End

The cumbustion is started earlier to provide more time for complete combustion. If you advance it too far you get knocking, because the piston is still moving up and compression is taking place as the fuel is burning: very high combustion chamber pressure.

Mine was set at 19 degrees for the last year and a half, and when I did a full tuneup, I set it to about 15 and there was no difference for me whatsoever. BTW,I have always used 93 anyway.

Are you sure

that you didn't cancel out your gains? In other words..you gained back some lost HP by duing a full tuneup(plugs/wires/fuel) but then lost a few of the timing gain by setting it back.

You could be right

I changed my plugs, wires, fuel filter, dis cap+rotor, K+N air filter but turned down the timing. Could be that it evened out. In any case, I didnt notice the gains I expected from the tuenup, I really didnt notice any difference( Performance). Huge difference in other parts.

Tranny Fluid Flush- Great improvement, much smoother.
New Nissan rotors, pads, rear drum pads, along with bleeding all 4 brakes( Old brake fluid was jet black, huge improvement)
6 studs on each side upgraded- That stupid sound finally went away.
New Tires- D60A2 215/60, awesome
FSTB- No difference, struts are shot is the reason.

minimal....

more fun than productive.
Best use of timing advance is throttle response.
Still woth it in any book.

Remember guys there is a right and wrong way to change the timing

I do believe the ECU will cancel out the advanced timing unless its done right. To advance or retard the timing you have to follow the procedure stated in the FSM. Now if anyone with a FSM would post these instruction we can do a FAQ . But as far as power gain its free power, on the dyno I gained 2hp/4lb-ft. It might not seem like much but the gain in lowend torque is noticeable. IMHO since nissan no doubt went conservative on the timing advance curve, (the reason for the 13-17 degree spec timing). There is some power to be gained by advancing the base timing. ALSO YOU HAVE TO RUN AT LEAST 91 OCTANE IF YOUR GOING TO ADVANCE YOUR TIMING, to run less than that is asking for a blown engine.
