Muffler fell off today and it sounds awsome!!!

well when i bought the my car it had a hole in the pipe right b4 the muffler and today when getting onto the highway it snapped in half disconnecting the muffler from the exhaust.. After that it was SO LOUD and DEEP it sounds nice and throaty!!!.. i still have the muffler it was still on the hangers so i took it off cause i knew it would eventually come off them and i wanted to keep it cause it was new last year. So my question is what to do. should i 1: get a new mid pipe and keep it stock or 2: let this give me a reason to get a cat-back system. If i go with 2 what would be a fair priced setup and should i go ahead with the y-pipe while im at it... any advice would be appreciated. And just to keep in mind i really only want to spend up to $500.

Would you mind getting some sounds of your Max without a muffler? I love to hear stuff like this. I'm kind of curious how it sounds with everything except the muffler. Mine sounded undescribably evil when I un-bolted the y-pipe from the exhaust manifold. I only wish I had taken the chance to drive around running straight exhaust, for even just a few minutes (I live out of the city, I could get away with it if I wanted :-)

Once my WSP exhaust comes in, I'm going to make a comparison movie of sounds from stock exhaust, straight manifold, and the full WSP exhaust w/ Borla Turbo muffler. I'll have in-car and outside footage of each. I just hope I can make the movie small enough in size so everyone can download it. I think I will also have to do separate mp3's of the sound only, so those can be downloaded separately. Damn, I need some webspace. Can anyone host all this crap when I get it done? Expect to hear more within the next few weeks.

GET A MUFFLER!!!!!!! mine fell off and it got really really really really annoying being so loud inside the car and also you lose LOTS OF POWER. no joke at all. i can't rememver if it's on here but search for backpressure. you'll find out that when you don't have much back pressure (like when you have no muffler) you lose tons of torque. mine fell off all of the way into some ditch... all i noticed was it was really loud (people loved the sound from the outside though) and a loss of power. i put a magnaflow on to get some more backpressure and the power was noticed right away.

you really do lose power because, funny as it sounds, u need the back pressure.

Why can't someone make a muffler with a valve that can be opened from the inside of the car (electrically?) so whenever you want 'aggressive' sound you can do that by pressing a button or something, but you won't have to live with it all the time, which can be very tiresome!

They do. They are called exhaust uncappers. I had these on my T-bird I don't see why u couldn't put them on a max. It was good because u have the torque u need at the start hit a button and the exhaust is uncapped and the air is free flowing. So try ro look for those for ur application.

They also have manual as well as electronically comtrolled uncappers. U would have to be careful because the electronically can be controlled in the car but break easily (Although i never had a problem with them) and the manuals i don't think are(not to sure) but look to see which is best for u!!
