I hate to repost a thread but LEDs in the tailights

from the 5-gen forum

Looks like alot of work to do it right but those 240sx conversions look really bright.

I would like to do it slightly different. Instead of worrying about filling the whole light cavity, I would be happy to have the stock maxima tailights lenses but have the brake light pattern to be circular. Like the older model RX-7 tailgights.

Depends on how difficult it is to take apart the lights and what your skills are with a soldering iron... It's actually very simple to get and put in 12V LEDs to a circuit board, the problem would be in the mounting.

I really like that idea Jeff, now if only I had the any kind of electrical experience...

It's actually very simple, and the nice thing about LED's is that they are resilient little buggers...
Try picking up some of the Engineers Handbooks from Radio Shack for $0.99 apiece and reading them, some give soldering tips and advice, and actually have some interesting projects in them.
Like I said, modification and fitment are the issue really, that, and limiting the current... But it's really dependant on the number of LEDs used...
It's basic Ohms law... If each LED uses .5A, (Which would cause it to melt, but for sake of simplification) and you decide to use 10 of them in parallel, you have a combined current rating of 5A.... Which means you need 7V LEDs, and drop 5V across a resistor in series, which would be roughly... Uhhh... 60 Ohms...
Keep in mind, this is just for example purposes, running that kind of power through an LED would either be A) One expensive LED, or B) One impressive fire.
I knew that Electronic Engineering cert would come in handy someday

Wow, that is a sweet idea...yeah those RX7 style "circular" tails would look sweet Jeff! would you do the turn signals in LEDs also to match??

I started on this project and never finished... I never seem to have the time, I ended up having to slap on new rotors and pads today, and it seems like there is always something more important than cosmetic upgrades. What we need to find is a good supplier of bulk LEDs, radio shack aint gonna cut it with this one. Anyone deal with electronics that can get us a deal?

I know what you mean man. I have a ton of repair stuff to do also(I have some fun stuff planned but it keeps being pushed back )

The guy in the 5-gen forum seemed willing to do it if you can supply him a pattern for the led board.

Da-Max, I don't know how the turn signal and running lights would go. The caddys have one row of leds vertical(and on the outside part of the lense). When the brake is on, the whole lense lights up. I don't know how you would do the low light and bright light(when the brake is stepped on)

A flat bar of yellow on the bottom of each lamp for the turn signals would look soooo sweet with the round taillights

Jeff, I'm thinking that he'd do it similar to that one he did for the public transit train application. This sounds like something that I'd definitely be interested in doing. Maybe eve so far as getting some extra 3rd Gen tails sent to him. I'm e-mailing him right now to make some arrangements.

Keep us informed, this sounds like an interesting mod, but prolly pretty expensive, it's time-consuming, especially if done by hand.
As for the blinkers, well, it can be done, but then on top of the added expense of time, you have to get LEDs that can handle the high output, and also put out a decent amount of light at the low output...
