About to order a caliper.......but need some help Matt93SE .
Hi,
I need a right rear caliper for my car (91 SE). I know Matt93SE told me to be very cautious that I get the correct caliper for my car.
What should I look out for? Does ABS or not matter? Also, does the caliper design vary from 1990 to 1992?
When I call up different places, all they care about is the year, make and model. They don't even ask about ABS or SE, etc.
BTW, I am ordering from a salvage yard. Prices range from $15-75 .
P.S. When and if i finally do the caliper swap, do I need to replace the copper washers around the brake hose, or can I just re-use them?
Thanks.

I believe the date on the calipers were before and after 9/90.
(Basically, if production date was after 9/90, the car will be a '91, but just check the date and model year to make sure.)
what you'll need to watch for are the TYPE of parking brake connector on the caliper and the position of the mounting bolts. If you can pull your old one off and take it with you, that would be best. otherwise, it's hard to describe the differences. If I can get time, I'll take pics of the different types of cables for everyone and show them as I've still got a couple pairs of parking brake cables in the garage.
It's a good idea to replace the copper washers also. shouldn't be too much from the dealer. If you buy stainless steel brake lines, they come in the kit along with new banjo bolts....
oh.. the banjo bolt. Make SURE if they take your old caliper that you get the banjo bolt. most dealers don't stock them and it takes a week to order one. Parts stores can't get them. I've been through that nightmare before. finally found a junkyard that had a caliper still on the car and I stoke one off it. only thing you can do on a Sat.

just out of curiousity, why not buy a rebuilt caliper? there is a big difference in price if you are paying $15 dollars, but rebuilt ones from autozone are like $55 dollars after the core charge is deducted(and lifetime warranty). Both of my rear calipers have frozen on me so that is why i would be wary on buying a rebuitl one. good luck.
The same issues still apply when buying a reman unit. where he buys it isn't my concern, but getting the correct one is.
but yeah, if you've got the money, a reman unit will be a lot easier to work with than another used one. who knows how long before the used one siezes on you. then again, you can buy a rebuild kit for a few $ (like 30 for the rears) and rebuild both rear calipers so they're in the same condition as a reman unit. save some money there, but be warned that the rears are a BIT** to rebuild.

If the REAR calipers were $55, I would go that route, but the last time I check Advance Auto & Autozone, even after core deductions, they still amount to more like $90. You may be referring to the front ones, which go for about $55.
