What is this Cylinder in the Trunk?

I have a 94 GXE and in the middle of the trunk up by the base of the rear seat there is a cylinder that is mounted to the floor that has a type of spring return action to it. What is this for ? And if I remove it will it have adverse effect on the way my car drives. Getting ready to start the stereo quest in the car so I need that little bit of room for ease of installation of the system.
Info Please
Kev

if you need more info, try searching on a few different variations of that

Could you repeat the question, since everything in here occurs in a vacuum.

I answered it that way and then gave a link to some very relevant search results which has more than enough info in it to answer the question completely

maybe he did search, but couldn't find the right words; I decided to try something crazy like "trunk cylinder" and found lots with that
people normally say search when they know that specific info is out there already so usually the person posting didn't do enough research to find it and they're just letting the poster know that they just need to try a little harder
this isn't directed at you in any way, I'm just saying in general
