I've had my 3rd gen for 4 years it's a 91'GXE and I was considering getting a 97' or a 99' SE after I graduate. My 3rd gen is my baby, I wrecked her 6 times, 2 fenders, 1 front cap, and 3 rear bumpers and I hit a curve in the rain. The point is that I will never let her go.(insurance company has spent near $6,500) I put 90,000 on her in 4 years and one new tranny. My question is: do the 4th gen maximas have problems with trannys still? and are the 97' and 99' SE models different at all? I also test drove an I-30 and they have the same engine but are the suspensions the same? Amazingly I am not attracted to the 5th gen body styles, I think the 97' and 99' look aggressive. Feel free to make suggestions!

my only comment is that the 4th gens have log rear suspension (solid rear axle) so they may not handle as well.

i agree about the 4th gen looking better than the 5th tho

er....uh... DO IT!

Its true that out of the box the 4th gens don't handle quite as well, but with a strut tower brace and sway bar, I'll bet it can get pretty close. Price for everything is under $200.

I think if I had a 4th gen I would do intake and mod the suspension. That's it though.

hmm
I am going to make a 4th gen my next car as well. I believe the trannies are much better then 3rd gen ones. Between the 97 and 99, go for 97, it will be cheaper and I heard they are faster.... 99's are the slowest 4th gens.
I'm probably going to get a 95 because I can't afford a 97, which sucks because the front and rear look much better.

not to go against my maxima people...but my best friend's mom has a 94 caddy seville, and i think it looks more sporty than the 4th gen max, plus it has the northstar 300hp v8. i dont think they cost that much more than a 4th gen maxima either. I would take one of those over an auto 4th gen, a manual 4th gen would be fun though.
