There might be a gain, but it will just be because your original one was 10+ years old, and the Carsound one is new

Put it this way, I had a hollow cat which definately made a difference, mostly in the high rpm region..before I did this there was no point in revving past 5K. Then I went to the Carsound cat, and noticed no decrease in performance, so I guess it flows pretty well for being so inexpensive. If you need a cat, this is the one to get. MEOW

If you're reffering to the carsound high flow catalytic converter, then it's definitely worth it to get one. Recently it was proven to outflow ALL other big name catalytic converters. People haven't yet really started to buy carsound, so while it's cheap i'd suggest you get your hands on one.

My experience with "gutting" my cat was not so good. It added a nasty tone to my exhaust and you were able to hear all the turbulence it created. I cant assume i felt any difference in performance as the best free flow cat on the market is only adding a few HP to our car (unless boosted or heavily modified).

I say if anything go Catco or Carsound, but dont expect much.

My exhaust was totally stock except for the WSP Y. I gutted the cat and felt a nice increase in higher revs..got there quicker too, not straining to hit 5500 so much. Witht the stock muffler, I couldn't hear too much..nor did I really car so maybe that was it.

Gutting cats doesn't help. It causes turbulence in the exhaust flow. You'd be better off with a test pipe if you really want the most flow. Just a carsound cat won't help much but, if you upgrade the full exhaust at the same time every little bit helps and the power adds up.

Yes, there are losses associated with the sudden expansion and contraction of the flow, causing changes in velocity. You get some head loss and turbulence in the flow, but I can tell you that it worked for me. My car ran fine before I gutted it, and it pulled harder and faster to redline when I did gut it. Probably more of a running improvement thatn actual hp increase, but it was na improvment over the stock cat. I had no $$ so gutting what I had was the best option. Cost me nothing but time. THat's jus tmy experience I guess...It might depend on the mods and condition of your engine and exhaust system. But it definately helped..not as much as a straight pipe would have, but it certainly made a perceptable difference. You say it doesn't help..period. I must disagree.

My catylitic converter has a bad smell every now and then (like a gutted cat inside the cat?) Any ideas on what causes this?

The rotten egg smell it basically contaminats built up in there..sulfer smell right? I know there are some additives on the market that are supposed to eliminate the odor. I have never tried it though. I would do that and if you don't get results (might take a few tankfuls of this stuff to eliminate it), get a carsound cat from WSP..or just a straight pipe if you doon't have emissions testing.

I had to get my car straight piped all the way temporarily with a cheap job. I kept the stock muffler and I hated the noise. I replaced everything from the flex pipe up to the muffler, that means the cat and resonator were gone. Now I noticed that I lost power in low-end and it sounded like shiet. Tomorrow this horrible noise gets kicked out of my car, I have in my room ready for tomorrow for intallation Warpspeed Y-pipe, carsound cat and the Greddy Exhaust. I will post sound pics of the before and after like on Friday or Saturday. Cost me a lot of $$$$ but it will come out sweet.

Consider that a new cat from the dealer is $600 + and then tell me what your opinion is. Even if it didn't flow better it is worth it for the $400+ in savings. I have an RT cat and I am very pleased with it. I have a complete exhaust. I have no resonator. My Max drones a bit on the freeway because I don't have a resonator and my muffler is a straight thru design but, it sounds nice and deep. Kind of like a smaller V8 rumble.

I finally got my WSP exhaust. Now WSP tells me the damn CAI's aren't in stock!!!%&$%^#W!!$#R^%#$&$^& I like WSP and their prices but, this sh*t is getting ridiculous (sorry Dallas!). Either way, it looks like next weekend I will be doing my 5spd swap and installing the full exhaust at the same time. Expect videos/sounds once it's done. I just hope my clutch gets here before next weekend or else I'd have to wait for the following one.

As far as gutting cats, I can see gaining maybe a few HP. I was simply stating that it's a very inefficient way of getting a few HP, not to mention the change in sound and how it hurts performance (seems like lots of low-end is lost).

Wow, tough luck on the CAI. That's the only bad thing I can say about WSp..the are inconsistent..sometimes they are right on the ball. Other times, well..you know. Good lick on the s spd swap. DO you have a parts car or did you collect everything at a salvage yard. You will be so happy you did the swap..Manual trans brings these cars to life. SO many people I have given rides are like "did you install that trans?" Not many people know that they made 5-spd Maximas..nor do they expect all that tire smoke and 2nd gear bark of the tires! Gotta love these cars. As a closing remark on the cat, I didn't notice any loss of low end at all, just a little livlier while revving and a little more oomph nearing redline. Definately not the most efficient "mod' but it does the trick in a pinch. And like I said, I'm happy with the Carsound cat because as I went from a gutted cat to the Carsound, I noticed no loss in performance. Carsound gets an A+ IMO. Post pics of your swap!

I got the parts from a junkyard but, they got the car about 1wk earlier so all the parts are in new condition! Got a good deal on the price too.

Yeah, I'll definitely be happy to be rid of my power sapping auto tranny!

The cars I've had experience with seemed to be negatively affected on the low-end when gutting the cats. Though, there could have been other problems that contributed to a loss of power. I'd definitely go with a Carsound cat though. WSP has them for only $100 or $110 I thought. The dealer list price is about $600 and some wholesale places sell the OEM cat for about $300 I think.

Yes Random Technologies. I think I paid around $230 for it. When I found out the dealer wanted $600 plus for stock I said screw that and went with the RT because I couldn't get WSP to deliver. Still way better than the stock plus it flows better than what WSP was selling at the time according to their own website.
