broke a spring!
broke a spring!
Today after school i was pulling out of my parking space and i got about 10 ft and i heard a load pop i was like o **** what was that. I got out of the car and couldn't find anything so i drove it to a mech. and the car pulling hard to the right and was making all noises when steering. Finally got to the shop and he put it on the lift and found the spring broke in half and it was a clean break. He said he never saw anything like that b4 so now my ?'s are 1. HOW could this happen and 2. would i be able to do the repair myself... i know i would have to get a spring compressor but would there be anything else....i have a hayse manual...and input would be appreciated... thnxs.

it all depends. First....which spring?? front or rear???
To me....the rear was easier because the rears dont have to be compressed as much. The fronts, has to be compressed very much. Although the fronts are easier to get to. Its just that the front springs are much bigger in height compared to the rears.
If i were you...i would first see how much your mech can do it for then decide whether or not i would do it because if this will be your first time you will always run into some sort of problem no matter what. And yes you will need spring compressors which you can of course borrow from autozone if you got one around you. You will also need...14-21mm sockets + ratchet depending on front or rear. I cant remember exactly what size sockets. I would also recommend breaker bars because those old rusty bolts aint easy to loosen.
Honestly me....i would do it myself. It's just a 30 min job. But thats me of course.
