First off your sister probably has a GXE since GLE wasnt available in the Maximas 3rd gen. Secondly, I have a 3rd gen GXE (like your sister) and mine came with the double din cd/tape/radio bose system. Im not sure how she has a single din bose system actually. My point is that yes, you should be able to put a double din bose deck into your sisters car.If you want to find one cheap look on e-bay or the parts for sale section of this website.

the new deck will fite. but if it is no boss you will have to get a convarter ($30) and wire the 2 blue boss wires in the dase togeter or it wont work. the best thing to do is look for one on ebay, or just get ried of the boss altogeter. if you do get a no boss head the boss system will go to crap in time and will need to be replaset any way.

You cannot put a non-Bose into a Bose system easily. I'd suggest looking for a 3rd gen double-DIN tape/CD deck. The 4th gen ones look exactly the same except they have a "CD CHG" button for the CD changer (if installed). 4th gen and all 95+ Nissans have a different radio harness than the 3rd gens and all pre 95 Nissans. You can buy a converter harness from Nissan to convert the two different plugs. Should only be about $10. Then you can put any 4th gen Bose into your 3rd gen.

You most definately can install a non-bose head unit into the bose system. You have to get filters to bring the new decks output to line level so the bose amps can make better use of it. It sounds like crap but if your short on funds it will do for a little while.

In my max (the aussie version) it came with stock clarion head unit / speakers (with the amp). strange huh.

Speaking from experience I would suggest cutting your losses, and purchasing another head unit. The bay in the Max is nice and large, and can be removed with 4 screws and a little prying. This will involve replacing your rear speakers (and preferrably running new wires to the rear), and rewiring your existing front Bose speakers to use the amp of the new head unit only. Should be able to do for under $200, and maybe 3 hours of work. Check with Crutchfield. Really good folks there..
