Valve Cover Gaskets

yeah uh, my valve cover gaskets are leaking oil. it's not a lot but enough to where you can smell it after driving for about 30min. it's not REAL bad but i've heard people tell me to tighten up screws...will that solve it or should i get them replaced? considering the car is almost 13 yrs old, i was leaning towards gettin em replaced...any suggestions?

tighten them and see if that helps. no point in spending a couple hundred bucks in labor if all you need is 5 minutes with a screwdriver.

I would go ahead and get them replaced. In fact, that's what I did when mine were slightly leaking. It's just preventative maintenance so you don't have to do it or even something bigger because of it down the road.

nope.. the single cam VGs don't have the problem with the coil packs. just tighten the screws and it should stop the leaking. I went through the effort of replacing them on a friend's VG, and once I got the top half of the engine torn apart and the valve covers off, the original gaskets were still soft and pliable. they would have easily re-sealed and done their job had I simply tightened them down. the screws holding them down were so loose, I could stick my fingernail in the slot and turn the screw.

so try that first and clean the engine. if you get more oil after that, then worry about replacing it. 5 min or 5 hours, which would you rather spend working on your car?

just tighten the bolts first and see how that goes if it doesn't solve your problem, at least you tried and now you must spend five hours replacing the valve cover gasket.

The man speaks the truth. I was leaking a little oil from the front and rear valve covers. It turned out that all of the screws were very loose. I hand tightened them and then cleaned off all the oil.

It has been three weeks and I haven't leaked a single drop. Talk about a quick, easy, and cheap fix!

You're forgetting that this is the world of "give it to me, and give it to me NOW- even though I won't do anything for you in return. And if I don't like the answer you gave me, then it's wrong and I'll make someone else give me the answer that I want."

Sad, but true.

I think I might be coming back more often guys
but im still on max-world alot, we need more people
anyway, LISTEN TO MATT! if youve got the money to spend on new gaskets, and labor if you dont do your own work, buy new gaskets. If you want a quick fix and use your money else where, break out the tools

btw, Matt, would that car you worked on happen to be kalebs?
heh

Nah.. I let Kaleb work on his own engine. he's too picky for me.. if I don't torque the air filter bolts just right, he screams like a pansy..
It was gotmilk2000's car that I did the valve cover job on last. before that was my aunt's 93GXE.. then there was another local guy with a 90 SE, and my old 93GXE..
I've been around the block on valve covers.
