sounds like you're talking about the regulator

very common problem

http://www.courtesyparts.com for the part
http://www.prism.gatech.edu/~gte671n/mymax.html for replacement instructions

this has been talked about many times before so search for more info if you need it

good luck

If you hit the switch and you hear the motor going and you don't hear a lot of grinding and hesitation in the motor it may be able to be fixed. I had my passanger side break. it went down but did not come back up. your symptoms may not be the same. take the regulator out and the window. Drill a hole in the metal bracket on the window near where the cable on the regulator is. take a small nut and bolt and put it through the hole so you can use it to clamp the cable to. if you have worked on bicycles you will recall the concept on the brake cable and the shifter. I am not saying that this is your problem. this only will help if the cable is slipping through the bracket on the window. The regulator also needs to be in working condition.

hope this helps.
