Slow performance in first couple seconds....

For some reason, from idling, to getting the engine up to 21000rpm, it takes the very longest. The engine almost "stutters". Where I push the gas, and for the first few seconds, the engine barely seems to be taking in gas untill it gets going. Is this normal? I started with a manual 85' volvo station wagon, and although this one really rocks in 3rd, off the line for the first couple second(untill around 15-30mph), I think the volvo would contend(4 cyliners, runing on 3, stock HP=112).
What might be causing this?
(BTW 91 GXE)

Hmmm... I don't know... at least 3months or 3,000mi(when I got the car).
Could I replace the fuel filter my self, or would it be easier/smarter to have a mechanic do it(I replaced in on the volvo, took 3(long painful) hours because it was on the bottom of the car towards the middle, and had several braces holding it on)?
If on the maxima it's as easy to change as the oil filter....
boy that was easy...
But I also get awful gas milage(about 200mi to the tank), so do you think it's probably the fuel filter then?

yeah sounds like you need a tune-up I had similair problems in my old gxe, change the plugs, wires, and distributor and haveing someone check the timing also may not be a bad idea

WHat kind of spark plug wires should I get? They have a slightly better-than-stock set for $20, or they have performance ones for $100, but would the performance ones give any real performance, or noticable change? Should I change the whole distributer, or just the cap?
Do you need to use a timing gun to change the timing(besides just having a mechanic check to see if it's fine)?

1. OEM wires
2. No. They just look pretty
3. I am not sure if your car has a conventional distributor...anyone?
4. A mechanic should use a timing gun to see if its fine

You dont replace the whole distributor! Just the cap, which comes with the rotor. Timing is easy to check if you have a gun. The best way to go with a gun is an induction type. You clip the gun to the #1 plug wire and your battery(for power), point it at the crank pully from directly above and adjust the distributor(if necesary) so the pointer points at the #1 tick mark(farthest left). If you have any questions about this just ask here.
