$250 for the whole car, and the only thing wrong with it is mileage and axles?

any body work needed?
axles are easy to replace.. 3 hour job.

it'd be a really good car for $250, IF nothing else was wrong with it.

Matt, it's $750, not $250.

$750 for a car with 250,000 miles, and needs axles. Lets say that you get the axles replaced for $250, you're not up to $1,000. Next you'll need a complete tune up (oil change, tranny flush, radiator flush, spark plugs, wires, cap&rotor, and more), lets say you were able to get all this done for $150. You're not up to $1,150. Take into consideration the condition of the tires. If it needs tires, you may have to spend anywhere up to $400 for tires. Then take into consideration the car has 250,000 on it, how much longer do you think it can possibly last? Who knows how many things you'll have to replace. When/if it stops running, all your money you invested into it will go down the drain. Don't forget that this is a junkyard selling this car, it must be there for a reason.

I think it's best you keep saving and buy something alot more reliable.

oops.. read a little too quickly there.

750 is still pretty cheap for the car, but as Sudesh said, there's a lot of factors involved. mostly it depends on the maintenance of the car itself. timing belt is always my first concern. there's $600 right there, then the axles and tires and brakes can easily add another $1000 in repair..

tranny.....
exhaust studs.....

you can jump to over $3000 really quickly in repairs to just get a driveable car..

but if it's in good shape, you've got a good car for cheap.

750 sounds like a good deal on a beater car. Maximas are good cars, and you never know - you may be able to milk a year or two out of it without a repair at all (aside from that clunking). If you take care of a good car like a maxima it's amazing how long it'll last. Sudesh is right about possible repairs though, maybe you should get someone with mechanical knowledge to check it out
