Automatic transmission problem.

Hi!

I have a 1990 Nissan Maxima. When I was driving to work today the automatic transmission stopped working. I checked the oil and it was a bit low. I refilled it to the right level but the automatic trasmission still wont work.

I was driving in approxomately 40 km/h or 25 mph. I heard a whistling noise for about half a second and then the car started to loose speed.

What is wrong whith my transmission???

I am from Sweden so please excuse my english.

Regards

Robert Carlsson

what happened after the power loss??

and how does it loose power?? does it just hesitate and studder when you push the gas or does it just feel like you're not pushing the gas at all??

its hard to diagnose this without more description of the symptoms...

From Sweden?

A guy from Sweden driving a Maxima?

What's the matter with you, not driving a Volvo or a Saab?

Sorry, I had to say that as a Volvo owner.

Wish I could help on your problem, but don't know enough about your car. Hope you don't mind a different question, though - what do Swedes think of Volvo vs. Saab? Why did not get a Volvo/Saab (seriously)?

The car dosent move its as simple as that. No oilpressure in the tranny i suppose.

in general...many of the early pre-1992 autos seem to suffer the same fate. there was definently a building flaw in majority of these trannys.

do a search search of the atchives you'll find a lot of cases and symptoms similar to yours, all eventually leading to rebuilds. One thing though, after a proper/good rebuild and installation of an auxiliary cooler the tranny tends not to break any more!

I agree...it does sound like a bad tranny

Have you tried to run the built in diagnostics to see if you get any error codes (you can find this in the FSM on how to do this)

If you take it to a shop to get it checked out, they will do this same
test and charge you $100 for it...

I had similar symptoms b4 they told me I need to rebuild my tranny..

It cost me about $1800 US

The same thing happened to me so I think I can help you diagnose the problem. Your transmission is broken.

i have been riding on a busted tranny for 4 months, (15k miles)
it doesn't slip, it doesn't have a loss of power, it never falls out of gear... it has a very small amount of hesitaion when comming froma fast stop and doesn't go into 3rd from a cold start up.(takes about 8 min. warm up time.
i guess you can just call it luck...
