well since the bose system in my car seems to suck @$$ i need to get new speakers and i was wondering what speakers everybody recommended. i am looking to spend around $200-250 a pair if possible but i need some that will sound good with my 12s in the trunk. i'm getting 2 alpine type r subs and they r really friggin' loud so i need some speakers than can keep up the mids and highs.

Speaker Suggestions

Since you are going into the $250-$300 range, I would consider some Alpines, a/d/s, Diamond, or Focals. Either one should give be able to give you the sound you desire.

go with the MB quarts

My freind replaced the speakers in his max with the MB quart component speakers. they sound sweet and also allow the tweeter to be mounted closer to the passengers and drivers. in the back use the MB quarts 2 way speakers.

Tweeters

When I installed my Sony CD player, it was quite an improvement over the stock tape deck, but the music still sounded "muddy" up front.

So I bought a pair of Infinity Reference Tweeters and drilled 1.5" hole on the top forward part of the door panel and installed them there.

The tweeters are passive (it was $49) fed from the main door speakers, but the difference these tweeters made in sound quality is remarkable! These tweeters are aimable and the front stage is now much clearer and brighter compared to before.

i have infinity Reference 4x6's in the front and they sound great. I plan on getting the 6 1/2 separates for the back. I think that the Infinity line has a nice clear full sound. Although Focal is the way to go if you have tha dough!

quarts are pretty expensive....

My freind payed 199 for the rears and around 299 for the fronts. I also have the Infinity refrence all around in mine, the sound is pretty good but im gonna jump at the chance when I get enough money for the MB Quarts. I had the components in the rear but when they blew out I replaced them with regular 2-way refrence's and kept about the same sound quality.

MB Quart makes a range of speakers, starting about $150 and going to well over $1000/set. they make good stuff, but sometimes it's not worth the money, IMO.. their lower line stuff just doesn't sound that good to me. but then again, this is all opinion..

Boston Acoustics stuff has harsh, tinny highs because ot hte titanium dome tweeters, same with MB quart..
but the quart has a very natural midrange. if you can get the highs backed off of the quart set, it's a great system.

My other recommendation is Focal.. I run them in my car and they're by far the best I've heard, unless you go to $1000+/set. mine cost me $450 for the front, but you can find some stuff on sale at http://www.zalytron.com for much less.
they have a special going right now that has a 6.5" and good tweeter and crossover (forget which one, but I think the tweeter is the same as mine) for $129. for Focal, this is an awesome deal.. the prices on that site for focal stuff is 1/2 retail. definitely worth it if you want to spend a little more and get something good.

damn.........

geez this stuff is getting expensive. well i'm just curious, i haven't ever heard any component systems before. how hard do the 6 1/2s hit with bass? cuz the way things r looking it's gonna be awhile before i can afford the subs i want.

why not image horns and Mb quart mids?

focal is a good speaker.

now if i can get a company to make static car audio speakers. i'll be a happy camper

If you want a speaker that will bang and be clear...

If you want a speaker that will bang and be clear, I would look at a/d/s or Focal. One thing about MBQuarts is that you cannot play them at high volumes or you will blow them and replacements are not covered under warranty.
a/d/s and Focal are speakers that dominate in IASCA competition. In fact, if I ever decided to throw a full blown sound system in my Maxima, it would be the following:

Eclipse 4441 Cassette Head Unit
Eclipse 5962 In-Dash CD-Changer or 8053 Trunk Mounted Changer
4 a/d/s 336 Component Speakers (6.5" Components)
McIntosh MC440M 6 Channel Amp
McIntosh MC443 Mono amp for the subs
2 JL Audio 12W6
1 JL Audio 8W6
Audio Control EQT
Audio Control 4XS Crossover
Lightning Cap
Streetwires
Dynamat

hey, if you go with Focal, I can get you those prices, if not better.

I'll have to check on the MB Quarts though, I know I have access to Focal though.

Matt: Are you selling those speaker pods still up front? I'd like to buy a set if you are I emailed you, but no response.

Bryan, Mass Q (or something like that) Sells electrostats for cars. they're $$$, but they are available. Shaq has a set of thsoe (and wall of 15s) made by them in his van.

Jonathon, which door pods are you talking about? the sealed fiberglass ones, or the OEM replatement pods?
I haven't "perfected" the sealed 6.5" enclosures yet, but I should have them done this summer.. I know that's a long time, but that's what happens when you work 45+hrs/week and go to school full-time!

I'm not sure, didn't know you made sealed? is there a big diff between the sealed and replacemnt pods? I need to fit a 6.5 in there, when I get my componet system
