Tranny advice?

My transmission was last flushed around 175k miles. It has slipped slightly when shifting from 1st to 2nd under moderate acceleration while it was stone cold. This has happened 3 times, all in the past 3 weeks. The shift from 3rd to 4th while accelerating (at 70-90 mph)has been a slow shift for about a year. The worst thing its done was earlier this week when I got in it after work and the torque converter was stuck locked up. I had to push the car in neutral then rev it up and drop it into drive, it unlocked after I circled the parking lot for a minute.

My question is should I spend a hundred bucks to have it flushed and hope that fixes it, I'm not sure it would since the fluid is fine. The car is a 94 GXE with 206k.

Whats the best option when replacing the transmission, a local rebuilder, the dealer, or some place like Phoenix Hard Parts? If a shop would replace the tranny with a used 5 speed for about the same price I'd go that route. The only thing about getting a 5 speed is this is my only car so it would have to be a flawless conversion, and I doubt any shop would guarantee such a job.

Do it yourself, or go with Pheonixhardparts and put it in yourself (auto). Don't try to rebuild an auto yourself, though, unless you're a pro. You could easily put it in, though. If you don't want to do that then take it to a local shop, but be careful and mindful of warranties and feedback from other customers. Don't go to a dealership, that's a waste...

Good luck to ya

DO NOT flush the tranny now that you have problems! For reasons that are not completely understood, once an auto tranny starts to go out, you should leave the existing fluid in the tranny. Once the fluid is changed (or flushed) at this point, you wont be able to drive it out of the shop. Start saving now for a new tranny.

The major reason for this is this: it's kind of like an old chevy engine. Suppose the oil hadn't been changed in many thousands of miles but it was still running. Suppose you change the oil in it and fill it with synthetic. All the crap and gunk that was holding everything together is now flushed from the system, or worse collected in the lines and filter(s). Engine locks up and is now an expensive paper weight. That's why a lot of shops won't flush your tranny without some kind of proof that it has been done regularly.
