Engine conversion

I know this has been asked quite few times but I havent been able to find a good solid answer. I have a 94 GXE. My VG may have some valve damage (TB broke). Im thinking of pulling the whole engine and rebuilding it OR buying a new/used engine from Japan. The prices are good for a used engine. Heres the question: What can I put instead of the VG30E? Please seriouse responses only. I realise you can put just about anything in but I want either the VG30de (maybe t), VE30DE, or maybe even VQ. I plan on tearing the whole driveline out so if I could put a different engine in then nows the time.
Thanks,
Dano

VG33 is another choice....but IMO if you're gonna go all out might as well go VG30ET bottom end w/ Maxima intake manifolds, you can't beat boost and the motor goes right in no problem save for a few nic nacs and custom work here and there...

Can you be a little more specific on what I need to do to accomidate a VG30DET? What do you mean by "bottom end"..the block and heads? And the motor really goes right in? Same engine mounts? What about tranny? Im really going to do this so I really need some pretty specific information. Thanks,
Dano

no, not VG30DET, the VG30ET('85-89 SOHC turbo motor from 300zx). Max O/D is currently doing this swap using the '88 300zx turbo bottom end(block and pistons w/ 7.5:1 CR) with the 89+ VG Maxima intake manifold. Maxima tranny bolts right up to VG30ET and engine fits right onto the mounts.

check out these threads I've been helping him finish up the project, we've been moving slowly lately but we are waiting for the piping to come back in, not sure if you've seen them, but check out these threads, it'll help you get an idea of what we are doing --->

EDIT: and if the pics don't work goto turbomaxima.com... we have an article on the front page and pics in the gallery!!

This is extremely helpful. Can I use my heads in this set up? Because I bought the JWT cams and Id really like to use them. The threads didnt seem to work by the way but I found some earlier ones in a search. Oh by the way..what about ecu? I have the JWT ecu and, agai, Id like to use that too.

Well you can just swap cams and lifters. With both motors out all you have to do is slide the cams out. If you do go turbo be sure to get 370cc injectors and either a walbro or 90+ 300zxTT fuel pump. Since you all ready have the JWT ECU they will only charge you $100 to reprogram it for turbo, 370cc injectors and cams. BTW turbos like cams, in the SR20DET's they put down like 10-30whp more with cams given the same setup.

yup basically all you're doing is using the VG30ET bottom end for the low compression! other than that the heads and intake manifolds come straight from your Maxima and bolt right on. you will of course need the turbo exhaust manifolds from the 300zx though.

and since you already have the JWT ECU you can send it back to them and they should be able to custom tailor you a program! The cams should work well too!

I dunno why those threads don't work...but if you check turbomaxima.com there are pics and info there too!

Oh one last thing...the tranny. Now would be a good time to switch to a 5 speed right? Which 5-speed will work? SE and 300z or just one of them?

trust I have seen this swap first hand, use the Maxima's tranny 5spd or auto tranny doesn't matter it fits perfectly to the VG30ET block. the 300zx tranny is setup for RWD and if you've ever seen one outside of the car you'll se there is no way it will mount transversely and no reason for it to! look at a 300zx tranny and you'll see what I mean.

It would be easier to just use a five speed off the 300z I get for the swap. Will the 300z tranny fit?

it sucks, i've not been able to work on it much. this stupid surgery bs has pulled me out of school for the first semester and i only get two credits for the classes i had to do a tutor thing in. all i've got to do so far is take the turbo apart because it wasn't spinning very freely. i need to either rebuild it or get a new one. i think i'll just find a new (rebuilt) unit because i don't know of anyone around here that can balance a turbo. hopefully i can start working on it again. once i can it won't take very long to put in.
