Alarm Problem

I have thise annoying problem with the factory alarm, and yes I have used the search function, but I can't find a thread that seems to pertain to my particular problem, maybe I overlooked something, who knows. My alarm seems to like going off at random and usually inopportune moments, with no apparent trigger. I have yet to find a fix, and am currently just leaving my car unlocked, which is a HUGE security issue but for now it beats running downstairs in the cold at 2 a.m. to disarm the damned thing. I was wondering if anyone has ever run into this, and knows how to fix it. I was thinkin the alarm box needs replacing, but im unsure to ehere it exactly is, under the steering column right??? Would anyone know the part number or the official part name in case it does need replacing??? I took it to my dealership and they said they needed like $150 just to open up all the old manuals and stuff and trace the wiring cause the car is so old it isnt in the computers. So I'm kinda looking for a D.I.Y. job here. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

man i get sick of how i hear everyday of these dealers trying to rob innocent maxima owners like us for relatively simple issues..

I think the alarm box is behind the GLOVE BOX (someone correct me if i'm wrong)...atleast thats where the master codes are written on that metal box. u may take out the glove box for easy access...do u have the keyless entry system on yours?

My GXE had keyless entry and had the SAME problem...the alarm went off ramdomly but since it only goes for 4 minutes only so as not to drain the battery...my neighbours just got used to it ...i reset the password on my keyless system using the master password and it apparently fixed it...i hope it does for u too!

you are wrong

the alarm is just to the left of the steering column for US cars; for Canada, it is just above the glove box

the keyless entry unit for GXEs is located just to the right of the glove box

not sure about the problem though

No I dont have the keyless entry or the keypad. My aunt has the same year GXE Max with the keypad and it's never had a problem like this that I know of.

For Future Reference For Everyone

I did all the checking I could and finally came up with something. The guy at parts said this was just the ECM. Sad part is... it's gonna cost a good... oh... $280 to just buy the damned thing. I still want to know whether anyone else has run across this and what the probable causes are, I'm really thinkin that it just isn't worth it to replace.

*sigh*

i had the same problem with my 90 se. It likes to go off by itself 5 in the morning. After a while it just fixed itself. When my bro had the car...he nevered armed the alarm. When i got it....i always armed it. That why it use to go off by itself whenever it wants to. The alarm just fixed itself after a while.

Craig!

Alarm module - you mean anti-theft module, right?
According to you in my car alarm module is located above the glove box (I'm form Canada). How can access it? Should I remove glove box?

And if alarm module located above the glove box then what is the module on the left under the steering column just in front of time control unit?

yeah, alarm = anti-theft

I've never actually done anything on a Canadian max so I can't say for sure, but according to my FSM, the alarm for Canadian maximas is directly above the glove box so I'd guess you just have to remove the glove box to get it out. There are a bunch of screws around the outside of the glovebox once you open the door. Just remove those and it should pull out. Then you'll have a wire and a "shock" holding it in I think, just remove those from the side and pull it out.

on US maximas: on left side of steering column, there is the time control unit and the stock alarm is just in front of that; on the right side of the steering column, there is the cruise control (ASCD) control unit and door lock timer in front of that (only 92-94 have door lock timer)

on Canadian models: cruise control, door lock timer, and time control unit are the same but in front of that is the daytime light control unit

you should enter the 4 digit code while the beep is sounding for the 6 seconds...There was a detailed thread on this sometime back....

the search function is your friend!
