Limited Slip Differential

Help! My 93 Maxima SE nees front axle replacement(according to the shop I took it to), but they have no idea if it has limited slip differential(and neither do I). Anybody know where I can find this information? Also, I was given a quote of $920 for parts+labor. Is that insane number reasonable?

Any help would be appreciated.

Do a burnout, and see if both wheels or jsut one spin. Just kidding....from what i've read, somewhere on the transmission casing you can tell if it has the LSD or not based upon how the tranny code ends. I'm sure someone could chime in with what to look for. Try checking the faqs too. $920 does seem a bit high. I was charged $800 total for a clutch replacement on my SHO, and i also needed an axle replaced. What made you bring it to them, and how are they diagnosing a front axle replacement? What are the cars symptoms?

Well, I brought it in for a state inspection, and the place is about 100 feet away from my apartment, so they seemed like a good option. Well, they didn't tell me how they diagnosed the axle problem, but they described a symptom I had been hearing: a kindof knocking noise everytime I accelerate into a turn(as in stop at a traffic light or stop sign and then step on the gas and turn). Would a Nissan dealership be a better option for the repair?

if you don't want to peel out, you can call any Nissan dealer and if you provide them with your VIN number they can tell if you have LSD or not. $920 is too much, my passenger side axle boot ripped and I had the whole axle replaced and with an alingment because it messed up when did they did the install for $140 installed and that included and alignment, go to another shop and see what they quote you.

Or you can just pop your hood and look on the silver data plate on your firewall. Clearly marked is the transmission code RS something I believe. If it ends with a V, you have LSD. In your transmission anyway!

like Ken said, if your tranny ends in a V, then you have limited slip; if not, you dont

that does sound high for just axles
you could get a decent quality pepboys reman. axle for $70ish with a lifetime warranty or get a very well reman. axle from www.raxles.com for about $120ish (depending on side)
you'll need tranny fluid too but that's pretty cheap unless you're using Redline or something like that (which is still about $7/qt and you need 4-5)
other than that, it's just labor (that isn't all that hard) so it does seem kinda high to me

Hi.
I ended up getting a quote from a garage, and they'll do both for about $400 total, which seems reasonable. I can't do it myself because a) There is no place to do so, I live in an apartment and the ground outside has at least 4 inches of snow all over the place, and b) I don't even know where to begin.

I did figure out though that the 93 SE does have limited slip differential(found it through edmunds.com information). Thanks to everybody for their help.

While the car (or front end) is off the ground and the tranny is in neutral, spin one wheel and if the other wheel moves in the SAME direction you have Limited Slip. I have yet to run into a 3rd Gen SE that didn't have a LSD in it. I also believe that it was standard equipment on all 3rd Gen SEs and became optional when the 4th Gen came out.

ALL 3rd gen SE's, or just the VE SE's? Did the VG SE's ever have them as well?
